○Atonement represents itself as a novel initially and then finally we see that it is a rewrite of Briony's novel, who is also a character in the novel itself. • it is a story within a story ~ it is a novel where a character within the novel itself is writing a novel which she is also a character in.
• it is a story about someone writing a book~Briony is writing novel in the novel. 
•The character (in this case, Briony) is taking part in a story and is commenting on the story while writing it.
