Navigation Act

Sugar Act

Under this law, a tax was placed on the importation of sugar from the French West Indies, forcing the American rum distillers to buy more costly sugar from the British West Indies.

Proclamation of 1763

It recognized the Indian's right to the land and it did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. This made colonists very angry because they did not want British soldiers to live amongst them.

The Stamp Act

Boston Massacre

Colonists began to shout insults and throw snowballs at the soldier. Soon more soldiers arrived, and as the mob leader grew louder and angrier, shots were fired. This deadly riot resulted in five colonists being killed that evening.

Tea Act

Boston Tea Party

This was a protest by the American Colonists against the British Government. They staged the protest by boarding three trading ships in Boston Harbor and throwing the ship's cargo of tea overboard into the ocean.

French and Indian War

A war which the French allied with the Indians against the British for land. Britain ended winning but needed people to pay taxes in debt for the war.

Intolerable Acts

These acts were an effort to make the colonists pay for the tea and keep the colonists from planning other attacks. These laws stopped all trade between Boston and Britain, did not allow town meetings, gave Britain control of the colony of Massachusetts, and strengthened the Quartering Act. Since the port of Boston was closed, the trading goods between the colonies stopped which greatly impacted the economies of all the colonies.

The Battle of Lexington and Concord

273 British soldiers died and 95 Patriots died in this battle. The British sent soldiers to destroy the Patriots weapons but the Patriots heard about this and decided to fight with Britain. The Patriots lost the battle in Lexington but won the battle in Concord.

Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was a document written by Andrew Jackson and others to confirm that the 13 colonies would receive their independence from Great Britain. It was signed on July 4th, 1776.

Winter at Valley Forge

The winter of Valley Forge in 1777 was one of the worst types of weather for the Continental Army. There were 11,000 soldiers during the beginning of the winter and 6,000 at the end. 2,500 of them died while the other 2,500 escaped to their homes. It was one of the roughest times for the Continental Army during the battle of Valley Forge in 1777.

Battle of Yorktown

The Patriots made the British surrender with the help of the French. Cornwallis surrendered and the victory at Yorktown caused America to finally gain its independence from the British.

The Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase was a purchase bought in 1803 by the United States. The United States only wanted Louisiana and the port of New Orleans for $10 million but the French were afraid that the British would take the land and because they needed money so then they gave the U.S. all of the land for $15 million. Then 15 new states were established and many people moved to this land.

Lewis and Clark Expedition

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806) was a federally funded venture to explore the North American West. The expedition's principal objective was to survey the Missouri and Columbia rivers, locating routes that would connect the continental interior to the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail was a trail that Americans took during the 1840s to 1860s so they could settle in the west. It was really hard to get to Oregon because people had to go over the Rocky Mountains in wagons unless they were walking.

Indian Removal Act (1830)

The Indian Removal Act was an act that forced the Native Americans to move out of their ancestral lands. There was gold found in the land of the Cherokee so they forced them and other tribes to move to present day Oklahoma and Arkansas. An American man came and asked the Natives to sign a treaty that made them go out of their land but they refused because it was their ancestral land and because they didn't want to move. But 3 rebellious people decided to sign the treaty and then the Natives killed them but by the time they went to the Supreme Court for help it was too late.

The Trail of Tears (1831-1835)

The Trail of Tears was the route the Native Americans took to move to present day Oklahoma and Arkansas. Many people died on this trail because of the cold winter, hot summer, and starvation.

The Missouri Compromise, 1820

The Missouri Compromise was a compromise that allowed Missouri to become a slave state but because that would be 13 slave states and 12 free states, that wouldn't be equal in power so Maine become a free state.

Attack on Fort Sumter, Ap 12, 1861

The Attack on Fort Sumter was an attack that was caused by the Confederates so they could seize Fort Sumter. Confederate General, B.G Beauregard was the general for the Confederates and led the Confederates to take hold of Fort Sumter. He asked for the Union to surrender but the Union did not so he attacked Fort Sumter. The Union then surrendered and luckily no one died.

Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation was a Proclamation which said that slavery can no longer be allowed because Abraham Lincoln thought that the Confederacy was part of the United States.

The Surrender at Appomattox Court House was a surrender made by Robert E. Lee to surrender to the Union army and to stop the 4 year conflict between the Union and the Confederacy which turned out to be the bloodiest conflict in American History.

Lincoln's Assassination

He was assassinated by this man called John Wilkes Booth. After days of searching, they found John Wilkes Booth and killed him.
