Cortes and his men kidnapped Montezuma. They also used military strategy to fight the Aztecs. The Spanish also carried smallpox from the animals back in Spain and the Aztecs caught it and it wiped out 5-8 million Aztecs. At first they did not fight back because they thought the Spanish were gods. The Aztecs often sacrificed their people to their gods and because of that many of them joined Cortes. The Aztecs didn't have horses or guns so that gave Cortes a huge advantage. Cortes had an army of 500 Spanish men. Montezuma had over 100,000 warriors.
