Culture can determine the type of memory strategies that work best for the individual (Mcleod, 2022). This also means what we choose to encode as memory can be affected by our cultural background. Sociocultral theory also mentions the idea of collective memory, where memories are shared by individuals related to the community and that community bears a collective identity (UKEssays, 2018).

The Zone of Proximal Development relates to learning because it is the distance between what individuals are ready to learn and what they are not, or what they are not ready for without scaffolds (Allman, 2018). Learning should match where students are at, with help. It means that learning is a mutual relationship between the expert influencing the learner and what the learner is ready for (Allman, 2018). They collaborate together in order to achieve learning, using the proper scaffolds.

Due to the importance and reliance on technology, memory is not as important because that knowledge can be stored "off-site" (Fiore, n.d.). It is not about how we remember information, but how we use that information within networks to create new connections. The focus is on the future, rather than the past (Fiore, n.d.).

In order to learn, educators must help guide students to control their own learning and create their own experience (Western Governors University, 2021). Students have to be able to make their own decisions. This type of learning relies on technology and discovery-type learning, especially in using ideas like simulations and gamification to make learning more interactive. The more types of interactions, the more students can make their own connections (Western Governors University, 2021)

Learning at the adult stage needs to have real-world application and lots of opportunity for learners to figure out information for themselves and create their own meaning (O'Neill, 2019). Spoon-feeding doesn't need to happen here, rather learners need to experiment and come to their own answers alone. Teachers are meant to be guides on this journey of learning and make learning real and meaningful for the learner.
