Kaycie
Clinical interest in DPD has existed since Abraham first described the oral character. As a disorder, the personality type first appeared in a War Department Technical Bulletin in 1945 and later in the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual 1957 (American Psychiatric Association 1952) as a subtype of passive-aggressive personality disorder.
The conceptualization of dependency, within classical psychoanalytic theory, is directly related to Freud's oral psychosexual stage of development. Frustration or over-gratification was said to result in an oral fixation and in an oral type of character, characterized by feeling dependent on others for nurturance and by behaviors representative of the oral stage.

People with this disorder do not trust their own ability to make decisions and feel that others have better ideas. They may be devastated by separation and loss, and they may go to great lengths, even suffering abuse, to stay in a relationship. They may tend to belittle their abilities and frequently refer to themselves as "stupid."
Dependent personality disorder may be caused by a combination of biological and developmental factors. People exposed to authoritarian or overprotective parenting styles, chronic physical illness, or separation anxiety during childhood may be more likely to develop dependent personality traits.
DPD appears to occur equally among males and females, and usually first appears in early-to-middle adulthood.

Amy
The behavioral approach states that human behavior is learned, and all behavior can be unlearned with new behaviors learned in their place.
The behavioral perspective on dependent personality disorder is that people exhibit dependent behaviors—even those that are self-defeating—because these behaviors are rewarded, were rewarded, or are perceived by the individual as likely to elicit rewards.
The behavioral approach is often the primary method of treatment for Dependent Personality Disorder. The goal is to help the person become more active and independent, and to learn to form healthy relationships.

Amy
The psychodynamic approach focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior. This approach focuses the client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior.
Children who suffered chronic illness, separation anxiety, or were exposed to parenting styles that were authoritarian or overprotective tend to be more at risk for developing behaviors associated with DPD than children who did not have those experiences.
Psychodynamic therapy encourages people living with dependent personality disorder to talk about anything on their mind, including fears, desires, hopes, dreams, and any issues they are currently dealing with. Therapists help uncover and explore how repressed emotions from past events and experiences affect current behavior, relationships, and decision-making.
This type of therapy also acknowledges that people often engage in behaviors they may not realize to avoid negative thoughts, feelings, and situations that can cause distress.

Amy
Psychotherapy is the preferred form of treatment for people with dependent personality disorder. Psychodynamic therapy attempts to help clients better cope with object losses and/or previous separations in order to promote emotional growth.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that focuses on how a person thinks and behaves. The goal is to identify negative, unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior and replace them with positive, helpful ways of thinking and behaving. People in CBT treatment learn skills to better manage thoughts and emotions to better cope with situations and interpersonal relationships.

Unlike psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT focuses more on current life difficulties rather than factors that may have led to those difficulties.
