How to do the Sit and Reach Test:
This test involves sitting on the floor with legs stretched out straight ahead. Shoes should be removed. The soles of the feet are placed flat against the box. Both knees should be locked and pressed flat to the floor - the tester may assist by holding them down. With the palms facing downwards, and the hands on top of each other or side by side, the subject reaches forward along the measuring line as far as possible. Ensure that the hands remain at the same level, not one reaching further forward than the other. After some practice reaches, the subject reaches out and holds that position for at one-two seconds while the distance is recorded. Make sure there are no jerky movements.
The sit and reach tests Flexibility
The equipment required for the Sit and Reach test is:

A sit and reach box

A person to assist the test and take note of the results

Above is the normative data for the sit and reach test

Skin fold test - Aimee + Jess

Body composition- Body composition is the percentage of body weight which is fat, muscle or bone. It helps sportspeople depending on the type of sport they play.
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/pe/exercise/0_exercise_health_rev2.shtml [Accessed 22 Feb. 2018].)

Equipment- Skinfold callipers, marker and a tape measure.

The skin fold test is carried out to give an indication of the body composition. firstly, make sure that the client is comfortable with the procedure. If so start to take the measurements on the right side of the body marking up the client accurately.

The skin should be pinched 1 cm above where the skin is marked, ensuring the fat is being pulled away from the muscle. Placing the calipers halfway between the top and bottom of the skin fold. allowing the calipers to settle for 1-2 seconds. After taking the first reading wait 15 seconds before repeating for accuracy.

After all 4 measurements are done add them up and calculate the body fat percentage.

The component of fitness it test is BODY COMPOSITION

  NORMATIVE DATA FOR SKINFOLD TEST

Area | Description of the site
TRICEPS- | Halfway between the shoulder and the elbow on the back of the arm. It is vertical pinch.
BICEPS- | Taken 1 cm above the site for the triceps on the front of the arm. It is a vertical pinch.
SUBSCAPULAR- | Taken 2cm below the lowest point of the shoulder blade. It is taken on a 45 degree angle.
SUPRA ILIAC- | Taken just above the iliac crest (hip bone), directly below the front on the shoulder.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
The last component of fitness I am going to be discussing is body composition which is the percentage of body weight which is fat, muscle or body around the body. The equipment that is needed for this test is skin fold caliper which can be hard to get hold. Also needing a marker and a tape measure which allows the measurements to be accurate. The purpose of the skin fold test is to give a clear indication of the body composition of the client. The advantages of this test is that the client is able to see what the results are for the triceps, biceps, sub scapular and the supra iliac. The test doesn’t take long to carry out but it does need a lot of practice to make sure that the measurements are correct. It is quick to do and pretty straight forward. However, the disadvantages for this test are that some of the assistants may get the positions on the body part wrong resulting in the results not being as accurate.

Hand grip dynamometer - Ellie, Chloe, Freja

Strength is the ability to exert a force against a resistance; or the maximum force a muscle or muscle group can produce. ( Sport level 3, book 1, Btec national, edexel )

1. To do this test you need to adjust the grip to a comfortable position to fit the size of your hand.

2. The athlete should hold the dynamometer by their side and squeeze as hard as they can for five seconds, without moving and exhaling whilst doing it.

3. You should then repeat the test on the other hand.

4. The test should be repeated three times on each side with one minute rests in-between each. Use the highest recoding from each side to compare to national averages.

Equipment needed: hand grip dynamometer

Advantages

· Compare to national averages, so then we know the test is reliable as we know where we should be for our age.

· No assistance needed, which makes it practical

· Set up and conducted easily, which makes it practical.

Disadvantages

· Specialist equipment required, which isn't practical.

· Unreliable results if machine isn’t used correctly, which makes the test invalid and unreliable.

· Only measures strength in forearm (biceps brachii), which makes the test invalid for whole body strength.

There are both advantage and disadvantages to this test. One advantage is that once you have done the test, you can compare your results to national averages. This helps you to understand your ability therefore; you can improve by working towards a goal. Furthermore, it is very easy to set up this test and it is very easy to do the test. Because of this, other than the 1-minute rest intervals in between each testing, many people can have completed the test in a short amount of time. Although the instructions instructed you to use a partner, this is not compulsory, as it is possible to record your own results.
However, a disadvantage of this test is that the equipment required is specialised equipment and therefore it is expensive. Another disadvantage of this test is that if you do not set the scale on the dynamometer to zero prior to carrying out the test, your results will be unreliable. They would also be unreliable if you carried out the test incorrectly. This means that the data you collect cannot be compared against national averages and therefore you cannot improve your strength easily. In addition to this, the test only measures the strength in your forearm. This is a disadvantage because you may have little strength in your forearm but have a lot of strength in your legs because you play a sport such as rugby or football. Therefore, this test is not an accurate representation of the strength throughout your whole body.

Normative data
