Then they can use their knowledge of UDL to design options for students to show their thinking and understanding of the standard.

I think if we had performance tasks developed, beyond the Lucy post assessments, before teachers began planning units and lessons there would be more opportunity for backwards design. Teachers would be able to incorporate these types of questions into their lessons specifically modeling them and during active engagement.

I tried to put myself in the role of a teacher and plan the next lesson using this tool. I put in the standard and the mentor text. However it was a real challenge to integrate the lesson and this tool. The lesson was about "suspending juddement' in fantasy. The tool seemed to be more set up for a final perfromance task or close reading activity. I might go play with it some more to see how it could work.

Anchor standard- key idea/detail

Showing videos to teachers and watching ourselves will help us see shifts in common core in action. It will help us realize some of this work is happening but that we have room to grow.

Also, another reason I identified this is at Potter we have done some work with close reading in grades 4 and 5 but I am interested in bringing this into the lower grades.

The grade specific performance tasks look fantastic. They are set up in the format of MCAS, so would give students exposure to that format. There is a 3rd grade one that uses Winn Dixie which is the mentor text for the Character unit, so that would be a fantastic post assessment for that unit. I plan to share these with grade level teams next year before they begin each unit.

The Expeditionary Learning learning protocol resources is something I definitely will share with grade level teams. Many of the protocols are ones that we have seen/used in our work with academic conversations and making thinking visible thinking routines. But it is really nice to have a more extensive list that will allow teachers to have options for addressing different learning styles within their room.
