Marconi Alongi: We have already argued in a way just like King Jr. If we use King Jr. argumentative way, i believe men would take it as a joke. If we use Malcolm X way, I beilive it would have a bigger impact over time. I would say, If i dont see a change how men treat woman, there would be consequence. I would base of my fact on, men treating woman bad, girl being judged base on there look.

Mom bacicly says, if you dont do what your husband want, you will become a slut and not have a love anymore.
Matt Wagner, back in the 60s and such, women were treated like less than human and in turn were not able to do many of the things that men could do. Women couldnt vote, hold a job etc. However now being in the future these problems are no longer common place.

Yes they have. During the 60s and later years, women were treated like garbage, but in the 21 century that is no longer how they are treated, if anything they are treated better than others. Women are able to vote just like everyone else, women company's are forced to hire women even if they are not the most skilled applicant, and a woman voice is louder than ever in the community. Sexism is no longer a problem for women (spare the odd case of an actual sexist).

They are no longer treated this way, now there are many more options, you see women in all walks of life, in every field, sure there are still small issues such as women getting passed up for a job, promotion, raise, etc. but that is only when you have the occasional sexist manager who doesn't see you as a person, that doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is like that.

The various women issues we have discussed have not fully been resolved in the 21st century. They haven't been fully resolved because there are still prejudices and stereotypes that women face. Women are allowed to join a branch in the military, get the same job as men, get an education, pursue a career of their choice, etc. However they are not given equal civil working rights in all countries, only six countries have them for women. Only Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Sweden have equal civil working rights. However going off what Matthew and Charles said, since the 1960's we have come a long way and women are equal in almost every aspect as men with only a couple exceptions. As we saw in the TED talk, the guy says that equal civil rights is good for everyone because it is in our best interest as men. Men want women to be equal, whether that's hiring a woman for a job, helping with childcare, etc, he found through research it makes both the man and woman happier if they are equal.

Collin Dome: The best way to make a change is through peaceful protests and getting people to follow you. The best way for woman to absolve the issues they face is to start marches and rallies to get the voice they are lacking. Rosa Parks is an example of a woman who chose to do a peaceful protest, that helped create a change. She along with MLK and others created the Montgomery bus boycott, that lasted 381 days until the U.S Supreme Court ruled that segregating public buses was unconstitutional. If women come together with peaceful protests like this, it will help absolve the issues that they face.

When we were reading the BBC article called Women's Equal Rights Amendment sees first Hearing in 36 years, that just proved that women still do not have all the rights that men do. Maybe in society we think that we have equal rights, put on paper women are not mentioned at all. A quote from the article states, “ While 76% of constitutions around the world in some way guarantee women's equality, the US constitution, technically, does not”. In the US Constitution women are not mentioned as having rights anywhere. So this amendment that has been trying to get past for tens of years is still relevant today.

We see one common thread that connects all women's rights stories is stereotypes because we see that in girl the whole story is how a girl should act and behave and in The telephone story we see that the wife always has to act and behave how you think a stereotypical girl should and this is even shown in the like a girl video to which is the main issue that all of these stories bring up if you simplify it down enough. This then affects women to be seen as weak or "like a girl" which is used as a form of inslt even though it's based solely on a stereotype. this then will lead to women not exactly fighting for more rights but rather for a different view on their role in society.

I believe that the various women's rights issues we have discussed have not been resolved in the 21st century. The women's rights issues have not been resolved because today women are still paid less than men. According to the AAUW (American Association of Univeristy Women) calculated the average women's salary and men's salary and divided the women's salary by the men's. The women were making 82% of what the men were making, which is definitely unfair. Also gender roles are still being used today. According to Michael Kimmel's Ted Talk he does say that women today are still being expected to help with their families and the men work.

In the video from yesterday the guy said that men today more than ever want to see women do things and work for themselves, but men also want to help women with household tasks.

In the article from BBC it states, " The #MeToo movement has underscored the importance of strong legal protections for women's rights." The #MeToo movement is trying to accomplish what was not 30 plus years ago. Some issues that do not exist in the 21st century, is that women are expected to stay home and take care of their children they are able to go out and get jobs and work.

I would say that the largest issue that women faced was the fact of women's basics rights and stereotypes about them. Women had not as many rights and opportunities as men especially in the workforce and even marriage they did not get to have as many rights. We saw women work twice as hard back then and get half of what the men get and they put half the effort women do. And the other main issue is the stereotype of a women like you have to take care of the children, you have to cook, you to do the dishes the laundry, and act like a women. We see this in the video about the telephone call and how the women is acting this certain like she's supposed to and not really acting out. We see this stereotypes even in our world today. This eventually began to see a fix after time especially the women rights and what privileges they got.

We saw this in the poem, "Girl" where a young daughter was told what she should be doing and her responsibilities. This is women's largest issue because sometimes they are only seen to do the jobs that people think women should be doing, and this thought process has become habit for many people. This has been shown in women's history and isn't as much in their future because women are breaking away from their stereotypical stay at home wives and becoming more involved in society.

And we see some of these stereotypes being forgotten about. But we see a lot of issues that still exist in the world especially in sports for example when compare the USMNT and USWNT for soccer if we look back to the past world cups we see that the women are payed we less then the men, the men earned $12,500 for each win and the women only earned $3,000 for every win and the men played 11 more games, also the women's team won the world cup. We see this issue because women are still viewed as less capable in the sports world even though we see them winning.

Overall I think that the largest issue that women face is expectations others put on women. In the poem, "A Double Standard" it says, " Of justice in His sight; And what is wrong in woman's life In man's cannot be right." This quote means to me that women are expected to do certain things that men are not, therefore the part of the quote about men and women's lives. This is a big problem because it means that women can't make a decision for themselves making their lives not really their own. However, now in the 21st century women are able to make choices for themselves and are able to build each other up such as in the poem " Women" is states, " Women should be pedestals to men". This quotes shows that women are more capable of things that people expect them to be.

It's a problem that needs to be resolved so we can see equality evolve even more.

@Ryan Miller and @CJ I agree with both of yall's statements. No I do not think that various womens' rights have been resolved in the 21st century. I claim this because we read multiple poems , short stories, and even watched a video written on first hand accounts and written not too long ago. One arguemnet I can provide is that in the workforce women still do not get equal pay. For example the US womens national soccer team just won the world cup last year in 2019 and the last time the mens team won was never. Still to this day the men's team gets paid way more than the women's just for losing.

I think the most beneficial way for women to absolve the issues they face is to try and put men in women's shoes and show them how their treated and what it's like to be treated unfair just on your gender. In the TED talk the speaker tlaks about how gender equality is good for everyone. I f women come together and absolve these issues then we won't have unequal pay or treatment.

In the short story girl it shows this issue a lot because this little girl is having to learn all these chores around the house "Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the color clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry." Women were known to stay at home and work at the house.

I think that the largest issue that women may face related to civil rights is the idea that women have to do all the household chores for the family. We see evidence of this in the short story "Girl" when the author says, "this is how you set a table for tea; this is how you set a table for dinner; this is how you set a table for dinner with an important guest; this is how you set a table for lunch; this is how you set a table for breakfast." Women were known to stay home and take care of all the home chores and take care of the family while the husband got a ob to provide for the family. This is a large issue because it made it harder for women to get jobs because of the thought that women were responsible for the home and family.

As stated in this magazine "One of the struggles that underlies all of our policy battles is the continued lack of women in positions of power." There is a lack of women leadership today and this is just one of the major issues women have. Another being that still some jobs today won't even hire a women.

Ongoing struggles include ensuring equal economic opportunities, educational equity, and an end to gender-based violence." There are still issues with women's rights today in the 21st century that need to be further resolved.

Some of the issues that I believe have been solved have been the Gender Wage Gap and the inequalities in hiring for Job positions which now can even be seen to as discriminate towards men.

I believe that women’s rights have not fully been resolved in the 21st century; because in places like jobs and school women are treated like less of human and they have to work much harder than men to get where they are today. There are lots of prejudices in the world today because of how men view women. in the ted talk that we watched yesterday when the guy was telling a story about a black women and a white women. The black women asked the white women what she sees in the mirror when she wakes up and the white women said a women. The black women said she sees a black women not just a women and that means that the whites don’t see everything they don’t see race or religion or color because of how they grew up in a wealthy home with lots of food and everything they wanted. This shows how women=s rights are not fully resolved because they also grew up cleaning homes and taking care of the children no matter what age they are like in the poem legacies when the little girl says “I don’t want to learn how to make rolls” she is standing up and doesn’t want to be told what to do all the time.

Early on throughout the Women's Rights movement, it seems as though their jobs just at their homes were the largest issue. In the poem The Country, it shows how many women would be beaten, ignored, and forced to be teachers at their homes, even when there could be bombs exploding a few miles away. This is a large issue because it seems as though many men would be able to go out and party, to only punish their wives for no good reason. This shows how much history has evolved to our present.

In the TedTalk from yesterday, the speaker tells his audience about "angry white men" complaining about how a black woman "stole" his job, but it was made clear it wasn't his job in the first place. This shows how there are still problems in the workplace for women, whether or not they don't have equal opportunities and/or competitors use bias and stereotypes to imagine that women are not fit for certain jobs.

Maybe in the future it will change where the men take care of the home and children so that the women can provide but in most families today both men and women work to provide for their families. But in this era women where prejudiced that they need to take care of the home and children but they were capable of having a job and to be independent too. This should stay like this for a while so that their can be equality for everyone because it is good for everyone to be able to work side3 by side men and women.

From the ted talk Why Gender Equality Is Good for Everyone Michael Kimmel says that “Actually, it's about one word in the title. I want to know about the word 'my.' Where did you get the idea it was your job? Why isn't the title of the show, 'A Black Woman Got the Job?' or 'A Black Woman Got A Job?'" Because without confronting men's sense of entitlement, I don't think we'll ever understand why so many men resist gender equality. So I think that men have to blame someone for taking their place instead of just changing one word like what he says. If you change one word it will be better.

The greatest issue that women may face would be not having a full voice. Not being able to have a voice kept them below the men not letting them hold onto jobs, not being able to vote, keeping them limited in what they are able to do. Sterotypes such as staying in the home to take care of the children and husband didn't let them prove themselves. For example, in Girl by Jamica Kincaid, the girl was being taught that instead of being able to play with the boys she would have to do housework. "This is how" is repeatedly stated when she is having to do something. If she isn't doing those, she would be a slut as she was told "the slut I know you are so bent on" and "the slut I have warned you against becoming. She is taught how to show her feelings to people she doesn't like and those who she likes. In ATelephone Call by Dorothy Parker, she is waiting for her husband to call but he hasn't called yet. But yet here she can't call him because "when you do that they know you are thinking about them and wanting them, and that makes them hate you." Things like these, keeps them lower than the man. This effects somewhat reflects on how a woman is today. Today, women are self concious but at least we have a voice now.

The biggest issue that women have to deal with is how people view our idea of gender equality that we are striving towards. This is an issue because when we think of gender equality we think that we are fighting to be better than men and have better pay and better status in the work place but truly it's about getting the same and equal treatment from everyone no matter what race or gender we are. This is something that the TEDtalk touches on is how be believe equality to be one thing and that when a women speaks of equality its a bias which yes it may be but that's because we continue to experience oppression simply because of our gender and then because of that race also plays a role in some parts because of societal views of everything that race and gender will always be a factor that are put together to determine so many kinds of things. I think that for out future we need to learn to work together and get over these differences and fears we have because we are all same in the end we are all human beings who deserve the same rights and if we cannot fix this I think the future will be very upsetting.

I think there’d is still some problem in our world today like jobs for women and sometimes just the way women get treated or the comments people make towards women. Although there is way less problems and women can still get through there day to day life it is a known fact there there are still some cases of people not hiring women even though they are perfectly capable of doing the job and they have all the right requirements for the job. This is because some people still believe today the women are not equipped to do hard labor. There is also little comments that go around that even i make sometimes like “go clean the kitchen” or “do the laundry” they women will get said to them, honestly even i will make those jokes and say them to myself so I think there is some things still needed to be fixed.

I agree that going with the ideas that MLK went with and having non violence is definitely a good think and it makes it clear we don't have a bad intention simply that we want to be treated equal but we will not become violent and highlight that we don't intent to take the jobs of men and to make things unequal for the side of things that the men see, which they fear is what is going to happen, is that women will take the work places over and be considered more important. But I also believe that if things become violent towards us that we can change to more Malcolm X's ideas that we need to put a push to things. Although I think starting non violent and seeing where things go is the best option.

I think one of the only differences in todays world is that the women of society are finally standing up and facing gender inequality as if it is an injustice that they are entitled to fighting back against, as seen in the ted talk we watched on Thursday

The women's rights movement has secured the rights aspect on paper but the real problem is how people treat women. Man to women and women to women, how women are treated is the biggest problem. Many businesses and industry's have discriminated women and question if women can get the job done. Another problem is in relationships, unbalanced relationships can be a very hostile environment and can have a mental affect This is shown in the short story " The Telephone call" by Dorothy Parker.

The most effective way for change for the women's movement is in the education system. This is a nonviolent way to make change and it avoids splitting our society. In the education system I believe they are using this strategy and preforming very well. If you teach children that men and women are equal at a young age it will be an expectation as children get older. That expectation will be put into affect once the children are adults. This strategy can be used with other problems as well like the problem with plastic in the ocean. This is very effective and avoids conflict but people have to be patient.

This is a large issue because then women are treated like objects, not like human beings. And if they try to get out of the situation they're in, they can't, because the men will not listen to them. This can be evidenced by a line in the story "Girl", where the mother says " this is how a man bullies you".

I believe this because women and girls must look and act their best at all times to seem "respectable". For example, there have been many cases where men have harassed women(husbands, boyfriends), and have not gotten in trouble for it, while the girl is undermined by the action. However, if a girl was to act as anything that can be deemed as disrespectful to that man, then she is seen as "deserving" of that action.

The largest issue women had when protesting for their own rights were the personal and interpersonal struggles that the women faced on a daily basis. Women had to break many of society's views and faced a lot of hate for it, which then in turn, made the women themselves want to retreat, just like in the story Girl. In Girl, the author writes, "this is how to hem a dress when you see the hem coming down and to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on becoming.” The author is talking about Girl wanting to be something that is viewed as wrong and different in society but there are so many people around her telling her not to be that way. It can be soul crushing to be told that who you really are is wrong. Just like in The Flowers, the loss of the girl’s innocence when she stumbles upon the man’s body can also be shown as when a girl goes off and does her own thing, the world will punish her. These ideas are large issues because many women will then give up on their own protest and fall back into society’s norms. That then has an effect on how powerful and influencing the protests can be when only some women are fighting for and others return to their homes where they are told to fight against. That then has an effect on the future because if women can’t make a change that means society wins and they have to go be mothers and do not get to become their own people.

Malcom X was viewed as violent but in reality he just wouldn't stand for being walked all over Malcom X basically fought fire with fire. Women in a way did too, they stood tall and expected the change they wanted they didn't just wait for people to change there views.

Women were practically mens slaves. I have 2 examples one of the which we saw in the short story "Girl". In the short story we see girls mom calling her a slut because she doesn't know how to do things around the house. Typically things you'd do for your husband like cook and do laundry. Since she doesn't know those things shes a slut. Another example I have is from the poem "The River of Girls" by Tishani Doshi. In this poem it says "This is the sound of ten million girls singing of a time in the universe when they were born with tigers breathing between their thighs". I thought of this as women only being wanted as some sort of object. These examples gave so much meaning because we've worked up to making change and we will continue to do so.

Some of the women’s rights have been solved today but just like with segregation, there are still many cultural beliefs that need to change. Women have gained the right to vote but going back to a reading about Illinois and the ERA, women have still not been declared equal to men which means that a lot of the cultural discrimination that happens today, is still allowed to happen under the Constitution. There are also some states that still believe that women should stay at home and not work. Even though that there is freedom to religion, some rreligions specify that women are objects, like polygamy. With new movements, like the #MeToo movement, many of women’s equality problems are still being shown. Although women are given fair opportunities in the workplace, under the new amendment that was created under Lyndon B Johnson, the treatment of women in those jobs is still stereotyped and unfair. Equity has not been reached, even after the efforts of the women’s rights movements, based upon the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), it states that women,”receive more college and graduate degrees than men. Yet, on average, women continue to earn considerably less than men. In 2018, female full-time, year-round workers made only 82 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 18 percent,” proving that there are still problems in our society that have not been solved through the women’s rights movement. Specifically, the problem that has not been solved is equity. Women are given the same opportunities as men but are not treated the same.

Peaceful protests and movements should be done to make people notice without causing harm or putting anyone in danger. This is similar to what happens now. We see many people shooting for equal rights in peaceful ways such as books and shows but we also see riots and protests. The peaceful ways are more successful in the fact that no one can get hurt and it touches more people than it angers.

Breckyn Haddock - Women struggle with a lot of issues in civil rights but main one is patriarchy as well as equality. Women are suppressed in this world and no matter how often they've try to change it, through protests, media, etc. It was always be a struggle. Today I'd like to say that women are making a change, they're heard and strong and many daily still fight for new changes and they're heard. Women over time have evolved into a voice as a whole, one that won't be silenced. I think this makes some of the upcoming generations much stronger knowing that women back then and now fight for their place and won't be silenced for it.

Women still are rarely found in management positions. Even if they are in a management position, they are often payed a lot less than men for the same work. Because of this, it lowers the morale of employees in the entire company. In the TED talk, it said "Gender equality makes employees happier." There was a common belief that men were better and above women, and if you did something weak than you did it like a girl. For example, in the most few recent pieces of text we have been reading about women's rights, the authors use lots of different approaches to achieving their objective. For example, in the short story named Girl, the author got strait to the point addressing the issue. The author used strong language to portray their message. Meanwhile, in the story named The Flowers, the author used very mellow language, but this format of writing is to mess with the readers emotions, and make them compensate their thoughts. Although both writings were very strong and effective on me, I would lean more towards the strong language, because that will demonstrate the severity of the issue that is being addressed.

For example, in the video, women are asked to preform actions "like a girl", and the women preformed the actions in a "feminized manner". This is a large issue, because that means that women are considered minorities within the society. Later in the video, young girls are asked to also preforms actions "like a girl". The surprising factor in their response was that these young girls preformed these actions as best they could. For the future foreseeing of this issue, we can only predict that this "feminized actions" will soon be solved because the new / young generations have not lived through this epidemic of limitational rights.

I would disagree with your idea of hosing "beautiful protests", and not breaking any laws. For change to take place, you must state a good point to the change you want to take place, and not host "peaceful protests" like my good friend Gandhi. For example, when a protest is held, it is held, because not everyone agrees on the idea of change. The reason for the protest is to make people change their minds, and if good strategies aren't used, then there will be no change. Now some may argue that protests such as equal rights really did make a change, and I would agree, but by the time the change has been made, you have already died because they take so long. If you don't believe me, not so much has changed since the beginning of the LGBT movement when it began in the 90's

Violence and law breaking are only ways to get your cause ignored in place of stopping the wrong acts you may be committing. In my class' discussion we came to a conclusion that the only way they could advance with civil rights was through MLK's peace speech, and the reason behind that is because violence achieves nothing but hurting each other, it does not change people minds but only blinds them with more anger. Violence and breaking law can never do anything but hurt your own argument and should hold no place in trying to achieve change for the better.

There are still many stereotypes. Foe example as seen in the advertisement that was given last week, "like a girl" stereotypes still exist, making women feel less confident and put a weaker view on women themselves. There are also many women who don't have equal opportunity to men. For example, football has been seen as a guys' sport but when women are seen playing it, it's lesser than the men's. There has been no gender integrated teams in the NFL, has there? No, there has not been. A woman has never been in the NFL to date. There is many other examples in sports as well as society that is seen for just one gender and not both based upon stereotypes and unfair treatment of women, pinning them as weaker than men.

Ryan Diana: The largest civil rights issue I've seen when women are treated like objects and not like a real person. I saw this in one of the poems that I read called "Women." In the poem it said that "Women should always wait" and "Women should be on a pedestal." This says that women are objects which is a big issue. This means that women can't decide who they wan to be, it's up to men. Also, this means that history wasn't kind to women, and for the future, hopefully we can change.

Ryan Diana: Some of the various women's rights have been resolved in the 21st century. Some of the issues have been solved because men don't expect women to be objects.

A lot of the problems women faced in the 60's don't exist in today's world. For example, trying to get employed as a female was a struggle during the time, but now everyone has an equal and fair chance at getting a job. The problem that I see in today's world is that if someone isn't qualified for a job or someone else that was interview better suits the job, people assume they didn't get the job because of their gender/race/etc. Put yourself in the shoes of an employer. If you interview 10 people and only 2 of them get the job, then you would pick the best qualified people for the job, Employers don't give a damn about gender/race/etc and people just make that assumption when they don't get the job. Improvements in today's world as far as how women get treated have improved. Sure there are people who still hate women but the majority of our society accept people for who they are in today's world. For example, there are still white supremacy groups that exist but 99% of the population don't have a problem with other races.

The biggest issue that women are facing right now is the struggle to distance themselves from their stereotype that was much more relevant in the past. This stereotype can restrain them from getting certain higher positioning jobs like VP's and CEO's and directing them towards a an easier, less important job when those women have more qualifications than most men.

On paper I believe that most women's rights issues have been resolved. What I mean by on paper is that there has been laws put in place saying that people should be given equal opportunity for a job position regardless of race, gender or religious beliefs however some people my find a excuse to say that "she's not qualified for the job when in reality she is.

Personally the way I would go about making a change is following what Dr King did by going against what your stereotyped as. For example MLK was not a savage animal like the white people said all blacks where, he dressed like a white man and acted like one as well sowing people that they are not so different from him. Woman can and are doing something similar right now in the work force. take for example the San Francisco 49er's coaching staff. Their staff consists of majority men with an exception for one female which is the assistant offensive coach.

Julia marcelli: responding to Marconi, I respect your view but how can a woman feel confident when they are constantly being view as objects, for example when someone says "she asked for it" this implies that if a woman looks a certain way they deserved to bu used like an object.

Koga Gallegos-I think they are resolving but not been completely resolved. Just look at women in power in Asia such as the president of Taiwan and the Mayor of Tokyo in Japan. Women are taking the lead and challenging the status quo in countries where biases exist.
