Find Mentors

I will use this tip to meet my future career goal of environmental educator by seeking out role models in this field of environmental education. I will inquire about their attitudes and choices that they have made up to this point. Most importantly, I will find mentors with emotional intelligence as suggested by D'Souza. I will then "embody these principles and cultivate them" (D'Souza, 2011) into my own character development. This will help me become a more successful environmental educator, especially considering that emotional intelligence is such an important trait in this field.

As an environmental educator I will identify my areas of strength so that I can use these to teach on environmental issues in the most successful manner. "In order to bring out the best in yourself, you have to first be able to recognize what your special gifts and talents are" (D'Souza, 2011). Then I can put these personal strengths to use.

I can build my self-esteem so that I can bring out the best in myself in my career. I can do this by being kind to myself, allowing myself to be joyful and carefree, recognizing my achievements, respecting myself and my gifts, and accepting the challenges that occur. (D'Souza, 2011) Building my self-esteem will allow me to be more confident in my job and more effective as an educator.

I will create a plan for my career as an environmental educator with goals I want to reach. "Charting your life is similar to developing a business plan that is based on your visions, values, and goals" (D'Souza, 2011). I will identify my purpose, values, strengths, and dreams. This will keep me on track to reach my full potential and not straying off course of my dreams.

I can create my own opportunities in environmental education. I can do this by following D'Souza's suggestions: setting realistic goals, believe in yourself, take the initiative, be willing to work hard, network and make connections, be open to possibilities, be prepared and flexible, be curious and open, and don't be afraid of failure. (D'Souza, 2011) All of these will help me advance as an educator and discover new possibilities.

Planning in one of the most crucial details of being an environmental educator. In order to successfully make an impact and reach my goals towards a more sustainable world, I have to follow my path and not lose sight of my goals. In order to stay up to date on the right choices and keep my vision aligned with my life I must follow D'Souza's tips. "Focus on what you want, plan how to get there, and then follow the path you've outlined" (D'Souza, 2011). This is how I can make change in the field of environmental studies.

My desire of change needs to be greater than the cost of change. According to D'Souza, desire depends on three elements: "dissatisfaction with the status quo, vision for the future, and practical steps to enact change" (D'Souza, 2011). By focusing on these three elements I will find myself motivated to make change on environmental issues and spread awareness as an educator.

Motivate Yourself Using Loss Aversion

With our natural instinct to avoid losses, this can be extremely useful when trying to maintain motivation and drive for creating a healthier, more sustainable planet. "The bigger the perceived loss, the more we can stay motivated to staunch the loss" (D'Souza, 2011). Since the "loss" is the health of our planet I think using loss aversion will be a very valuable tool to stay on course and continue taking action to better our planet as an environmental educator.

The last tip for success is to turn work into play. I can do this by finding a friend and enjoying the process. (D'Souza, 2011) Sharing my journey, experiences, and goals with a friend or loved one makes the process so much more fun. Reaching my goals and trying to create a more sustainable planet with more environmentally cautious people can be a fun journey so I will make it one. Change should be fun and exciting!
