Tears for Fears: Lighting and Visuals

An example that we drew from was tears for fears live performance of everybody wants to rule the world as exemplified here. The aspects of this performance that myself and Campbell drew inspiration from is the following. Firstly, we liked the simple static lighting that the performance exhibits as our set is going to be a simple and sombre acoustic set. I feel this example of lighting will be beneficial as too much flashy lighting effects would be complete antithesis of the aesthetic we are trying to reach.

Kara Jackson: Aesthetic & Aura

A factor from this performance that we drew inspiration from is the overall aesthetic. Myself and Campbell were captivated by how even though Kara Jackson is stood alone on stage playing nothing but her guitar, she commanded the attention and awe of the listener. We are hoping to emulate this awe inducing feel for our performance by similarly having very little on stage with just me,Campbell, a guitar and some microphones. This will aid in drawing the attention solely to ourselves and then our powerful performance will hopefully keep the listeners encapsulated.

Laura Mvula: Videography

An aspect of Laura Mvula's live performance of Human Nature that we throughly enjoyed and wanted to emulate was the videography displayed. The different camera angles, close ups and emphatic zooms on timed parts of the song was a factor that really assisted in making this performance stand out as professional and enjoyable to watch. We are hoping to use some of these same videography techniques to similarly give our performance the same feel of professionalism and enjoyability.

So What is UnExpected ?

UnExpected is the musical duo consisting of myself and Campbell Hopkins. Our aim is to produce meaningful and often times more sombre songs that people can relate to on a deep emotional level. The name UnExpected resonated with us as we feel we subvert the stereotypes that people assume of us. This is due to people often assuming we are an Indie/Punk Rock duo when in reality we write sad songs for people who are sad in hopes of connecting to and helping them, Hence the 'Unexpected' music we release. We draw a considerable amount of inspiration from renowned artists such as James Arthur. We aim to use the immense vocal ability we possess to grab the attention of a listener and pair that with impressive lyricism that will captivate, exactly how James Arthur does.

Editing & Style

A lot of our inspiration for the editing of performance video was drawn from a YouTube by the name Rupture. Rupture is a youtuber who specialises in editing. Some of his videos are extremely in-depth and show impressive knowledge of editing. However, He tends to upload Video Essays of various subjects such as movies. The editing style of those videos specifically are the main aspect of which we took inspiration from. His Video Essays showcase a simplistic yet pleasing style of editing. As his voice over plays the words he is saying will appear on the screen. This is highly effective as not only does it draw the focus of the viewer but immerses them in the recording, as if they are the ones typing their own ideas onto the video themselves. We appreciated this especially as relatability is one of our key goals when it comes to our music and this style of editing further enhances that.
