The Island was greatly expanded with land reclamation between 1892 and 1934. Before that, the much smaller original Island was the site of Fort Gipson and later a naval magazine. It was dedicated on September 26 1972 in a ceremony presided over by President of the United States Richard Nixon. The museum closed in 1991 following the opening f immagration useum on nearby Ellis Island.
