I chose 'teaching designed to remove barriers to learning' as the first priority because I believe students often perform better when they have the freedom to choose content or methods. For example, they might prefer visual forms of the novel or different ways to carry out an activity. I chose 'teaching focused on conceptual understanding' as the second priority because much of the teaching and work will be largely conceptual. Students will need to see things in 'large chunks,' and concepts will help them do that. This approach will also enable students to connect ideas from one text to another. I chose 'collaboration' as the third because learning does not happen in a vacuum. The only way to truly learn will be to consider unique ways to see things. This will help bring in rich ways to ground their knowledge.

Even though I believe all these aspects are important, I feel that students who take responsibility for themselves and their work are often more successful. However, we cannot assume they inherently know how to do this. Teachers need to facilitate this development through strategic teaching and scaffolding. Additionally, students greatly benefit from feeling they are in a safe environment where they can ask questions. An open environment helps students break cultural barriers and provides opportunities for diverse thinking. It is crucial for teachers to create a classroom atmosphere that encourages active thinking rather than discourages it. Asking open-ended questions and organizing activities, such as Socratic seminars, can help students consider different approaches.

Hello, my name is Joshua Kim. I teach in Jakarta, Indonesia, where I have been living for about four and a half years. During this time, I have been teaching English B and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). As a relatively new teacher, I find the experience both challenging and rewarding. I am originally from California. I am fascinated by the idea of exploring different parts of Indonesia and Southeast Asia. I am married and have a two year old child.

What is the most pressing question you have about the Language A: language and literature course?

What are some different methods, styles, approaches, and structures for writing your Paper 1 (and Paper 2)? I ask this because it seems there are multiple ways to structure a paragraph, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach.

How can you develop positive online professional relationships for the workshop and beyond?

I need to ask good questions and be respectful of the different styles and approaches of others. Additionally, I need to adapt, be open to feedback and correction, and encourage others to create a positive learning environment. One difficult thing that I think I need to work on is to be vulnerable.
