I am a project manager so am very used to managing projects by breaking them down into manageable components or Project Life Cycle Stages and focusing on key activities and deliverables' associated with each stage. Therefore, the model of Instructional Design which I prefer is ADDIE as its very closely aligned with project life cycle stages. It’s always great to have a short acronym as well to help remember the various stages.

While ADDIE provides a practical step-by-step approach to Instructional Design, I feel that in particular the design, development and implementation of course content is considerably enhanced by the application of ARC and Gagné’s Nine Events. As educators we all want to capture and nurture learners’ interest with relevant and rich content, which is easy to remember, answers their ‘what’s in it for me?’ question and is delivered through a variety of teaching methods.

While ADDIE provides a mechanism for managing the various stages of Instructional Design, ARC and Gagné’s Nine Events provide guidance information on how we go about making our content relevant and our delivery efficient and effective in terms of achieving learning outcomes.

The one that resonates with me most is ARCS Model of Motivational Design as it taps into the emotional aspect of learning but I am also drawn to the ADDIE model for it's logical and cyclical approach to designing and developing courses. I would envisage designing my course with the ARCS Model as my framework, but linking out to the ADDIE development process when it comes to considering the actual content, and asking myself whether I have considered the key stages. In the past I have created courses for management training and have spent more time focusing on the content than on how I was actually going to engage my audience and more importantly sustain their interest. The ARCS model provides mental stimulation to the designer which in turn should translate effectively for the learner.

I think that I will choose ARCS as the framework that I will use for designing courses. Mostly because it is easiest to remember and therfore to apply to course content.
It "does what it says on the tin" as a method. The short acronym gains my (short) attention span, Relevance to the learner keeps them interested and confidence through practice and ease of use leads to satisfaction all around. I can see these elements in Gagne's model and in ADDIE too, but 4 letters wins for me.
