According to Dell, Newton, and Petroff (2017), they talk about using the SETT Framework to determine what a students needs (p. 15). Each letter in SETT stands for student, environment, tasks, and tools. This was my first time hearing about this method they use to determine what technology device a student receives and I found it to be a pretty good strategy. Do you think this is a helpful way for therapists or teachers to use to determine what assistive technology device a student receives?

I think this is a very helpful way to determine which useful technology to use to assist students in the classroom. It starts off by keeping the student in mind and what their needs are, which is the most important aspect. I also like how this process covers low-high tech options. It does not assume that high-tech would be the best or take the cheapest route with a low-tech options.

Yes, I think this is a good place to start when trying to determine what AT device and services a student needs. I like the environment is included in this because accessibility, space, time, and what capacity should be considered. I also love that the student is first.

The SETT framework is a very good tool to use in determining the assistive technology that should be used by a particular student. It is also very important that constant monitoring be done to ensure that it is indeed appropriate for the student and that is is being used efficiently

The SETT framework is a great approach for collaborative decision making in assistive technology. The main focus is the student. Using this approach allows the team to consider the student’s unique needs, their environment, the tasks required for them to participate, and the tools needed to do that. The SETT framework is also great because it supports collaborative work.

I think this is a good strategy because it puts the focus on the student. Not only that, but it also takes into account the environment and what tools would be best for the student while keeping in mind what tasks the student would need to be able to do with the device.

I also think using the SETT framework is extremely useful and a good way to determine what assertive technology is suitable for each child. However, I will say that every student is different and we really wouldn't be able to tell with 100% certainty until the student has tried it and is has either helped or hindered.

Posted By: Lauren Farr

In deciding which assistive technology, a student’s needs to learn to their fully capacities the school needs to talk to the student, the parents or guardians, and the teachers to see what technology they would suggest to be helpful for the student. By keeping in mind, the student’s needs, and what was suggested, the school can take a look at SETT to help determine the final decision of assistive technology will be used by the student.

When deciding what type of assistive technology is going to best meet an individual's needs, the SETT method is a good basis to make a determination. However, you would also require input based on all the professionals that work the individual and can provide a different perspective when making a choice. Also, the decision must be based on what accommodates the families needs and it must be able to accommodate the individuals home life as well.
