After seeing Shem get along with his partner and learning that he would be granted no wife on the Ark, Ham was very upset. He argued extensively with Noah that he should have a partner on the Ark. In Ham's eyes, this only seemed fair, everyone else had someone else. Despite this, Noah insisted that Ham didn't bring anyone, it was not part of God's plan. Ham does not listen to the words of his father and instead goes into the camp where he meets Na'el. After spending some time with her he decides to bring her back to the Ark. However, when the flooding begins, he must rush back to avoid being trampled by the mob. During the rush, Na'el gets her leg stuck in a trap. Ham attempts to free her but Noah appears and forces him to leave her.

After the flooding starts and Na'el is caught in the trap, Ham tries to free her. When Noah arrives, he realizes that there is no time and Ham must leave for the Ark. Noah had to make the decision to take Ham away from Na'el. In the process, this left her to die from being trampled, all while Ham watched. Noah made a decision that was essential for the survival of Ham, even though it caused hatred to spread.

Symbols and Meanings

The moral problems encountered by the characters carried a lot of meaning with them. Ham's decision to seek for a wife when his father had told him no was an act of rebellion. In a way, the search can be seen as falling to temptation as it caused Ham to go against what God had ordered.

The choice that Noah made was a testament of his faith to God. He did what was necessary, not what was wanted by him or Ham. Noah was not tempted by short term goals, and instead remained faithful through all the difficult times.
