Slab and Mouth and Teeth

I used about 80% of my clay to role out the slab. I let it dry get a little hard and started outlining where i wanted the lips and teeth. I didn't want to make the lips as a seperate piece because i thought it would be hard to get it how I wanted. Instead, I used a ton of little pieces and packed them onto the slab itself. For the teeth, I just made little rectangles that were purposelessly messed up a bit so they looked more rugged to follow my inspirations.

Eyes and Indents and Tongue

I then made the tongue. This was very important to me because i wanted the face to have a scary vibe. I made the tongue stick out super far so that it would look more aggressive, I then pushed down all the clay on the inside of the mouth so that it would look more 3d even though is a 2d surface. I decided to get the ball tool to add lines outlining any facial features. I learned that this added a sense of depth which I thought was neat. Next I did the eyes. For them, I put down little pieces on the slab and built up. I did this so that it would only take one try and be able to built to my liking. If I chose a different method I think it would have been harder to get the right shape and look. I also added the same indents around the eyes as I did with the mouth

Nose and Aang's Arrow and Cheek Bones

I finished up the eyes with a cover pieve of clay and moved on. I looked up tiki masks to get the nose shape. Using smaller pieces pushed onto the slab was working super well even though it was more tedious. Because of this, I used the method to make the whole nose. I really liked the depth that the project was showing, so I pushed in the middle of the nose with the ball tool, and then used the same tool to make the nostril holes. After the nose, the project needed something to fill in the top and sides. For the sides I pushed down a ton of clay and made what ended up looking like huge cheek bones. I liked the way it looked so I finished it off by using the ball tool and making more indents that followed around the facial features. I then put in Aang's arrow at the top to fill in that space. I proceeded to round the facial features and add more emotion.

Inpiration

I wanted to make something that tied in a lot of aspects of my life. I started out with the idea of making something having to do with Hawaii because that is where my mom is from. I took tiki inspiration when making the lips, nose, eyes, and smaller details. I made the tongue kinda scary looking so it would resemble the face Hawaiian tribes make during war chants. I used to watch Avatar and thought that Aang's head arrow thingy looked really cool. I also took inspiration from a tattoo on the inside elbow area.

Reflection

There were a few really important aspects that I kept in mind through the whole process. I wanted to keep the building process simple because that isn't my strong suit. I learned from the last project and realized that I should go slower and do less complex steps. I never put on whole pieces to complete the facial features. Instead I just pushed clay on the slab and shaped it how I wanted with each slice I added. I really wanted the features to be outlandish and overly compensated for. To get this look, I pushed in the slab to make negative areas and overbuilt the features to add contrast and positive areas. I didnt want any part of the project to look blank, so I made sure to put something everywhere. On the other hand, I didn't want it to look too busy. What I learned is the if you push in a slab too far, it weakens the structure. This was learned the hard way and sadly the mouth backing got too thin. I also learned a lot about added smaller details to make the project look more complete. This project was super fun for me because I got to use what I've learned from the whole year and I truly enjoyed it. Art isn't really my strong suit but I really like this piece. It draws in a lot of aspects of my personal life, and is a conversational piece.
