They were fighting for the freedom of African Americans and to abolish slavery. Slavery was inhumane and needed to end, so it was absolutely worth it, even though there was so much death. 
For the South, I could see how some people thought it was worth it due to the money they spent on their slaves, but it was not. It ruined the lives of poor white folk and it caused so much death. Pros- Slaves were freed, Lincoln became president, and the union was saved. Cons: so many people died, racism, poverty, and division 

The North had motivation because they wanted their freedom. Many of them died, but in the end slaves became free. I thought is was worth it for all of the slaves to be free. 

I think it wasn't worth is for the south because so many people died. Some of the motivations the south had was protecting their rights.  Even though no one was threatening them they still felt that there where taken away from them.
The Motivation for the north was they were protecting the union.  They went into battle knowing they were trying to save the country and the people in it.
So I feel that the war was overall worth the cost for the freedom and a united country.

The war basically ended in several unnecessary deaths but it freed 4 million slaves. 
The South wanted to fight for slavery to keep them.
