All his motivation is intrinsic (he is not motivated by grades). However he is not intrinsically motivated to fit in to the learning community (sociocultural role). Potentially not receiving extrinsic motivation through teacher support.

What might we (as teachers) do to support the student?

As he is intrinsically motivated, giving him more autonomy to chose tasks which are closer to his area of interest but still within the subject area and targeting learning outcomes. Making him see the value in learning biology and how it can apply to chemistry. Increase connections between biology and chemistry. Encouraging them to see there is value in what he is learning.

Check in with the student and see what is going on. Appears as if the student might have some underlying issues internally- does he have a diagnosis of ADHD/ADD? Autism.
- Instructions are more explicit.
-Offer different forms of communication- auditory? Pictures?
- Offer more modelling in terms of teaching - I do, we do, you do.
- Check in with all students and with Henry, how is this content landing? Do we need to go over anything again? Is there something that can be explained differently?
- Is the teacher struggling to understand and deliver the content themselves which makes it harder for students to pick it up.
- Ask around to see if this behvaior is just in one class or over all classrooms.
