Women have always been seen as inferior to men for as long as we can recall, but the first recorded step towards equality for men and women was in 1847; the first woman's rights convention. At this convention, a modified version of the declaration of independance was signed by 68 woman and 32 men, this document highlighted womans suffrage and equal rights.

The Civil War - 1860

The Civil War begins in the United States and women’s rights advocacy grinds to a halt until the war ends in 1865. Women were joining the Civil War to help, as nurses or soldiers, also as civilian volunteers.

1869 the ratification of the 15th Amendment

In 1869 the 15th Amendment was ratified saying "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."

1871 Susan B. Anthony registers and votes

Susan B. Anthony registers and votes for Ulysses S. Grant in the presidential election. She was then arrested, tried, and convicted in 1873 even though her defense was that the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment led her to vote.

Declaration of Rights for woman-1875

On July 4, during an official Centennial Program at the Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Susan B. Anthony and Matilda Joslyn Gage interrupted the program abruptly, presenting a Declaration of Rights for women that demanded equal rights for men and women.

Formation of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) - 1890

The National Women Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association merge to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association, led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. As the movement's mainstream organization, NAWSA wages state-by-state campaigns to obtain voting rights for women.

1896 The National Association of Colored Women

Hoping to achieve the goal of equality for women of color the National Association of Colored Women was formed, bringing over 100 black women's clubs together. Some leaders in this includes Anna Julia Cooper and Mary Church Terrell.

1920- The 19th Amendment certified

On August 18, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was certified as law, this Amendment states that the American right to vote will never be denied due to gender; so now both men and women can vote.
