the SOUNDS of words

Rhyme: Words that have different beginning sounds but whose endings sound alike, including the final vowel sound and everything following it, are said to rhyme.

Example: The first verse, line b, "sunlight that streams like grace", the second verse, line b, "staked across the emptiness of space", and the third verse, line b, "assume a human face". All the consonant sounds of the final words, grace, space, and face, are the same and rhyme.

Example 2: The fourth verse, line b, "that began as a cry", and the fifth verse, line b, "although reduced to a sigh". Both consonant sounds of the final words, cry, and sigh, have a near rhyme.

Effect: The sound of wording within this poem really didn't have an effect on me as a reader.

The MEANINGS of words

Allegory: A representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning. Often, it is a symbolic narrative that has not only a literal meaning, but a larger one understood only after reading the entire story or poem.

Example: The third verse, "into a history where shadows assume a human face" is an example of an allegory. Only when finishing the entire poem, the reader can then begin to understand what the author is saying in this particular stanza of the poem. It's not common to question the subject behind a shadow for our past gives us enough evidence to assume what it is without visually seeing it.

Effect: An effect of this allegory is that it forces me to fully read the entire poem in order to further understand and appreciate the meaning of his poem. I think that author deliberately chose to reveal the meaning of poem, a man who plays his accordion on the streets until the end to show how we can misjudge things without knowing the entire story.

Imagery: The use of vivid language to generate ideas and/or evoke mental images.
Examples from poem:
Sight:
Sunlight that streams like grace
Still gaping at blue sky
Sound:
A man slips into silence that began as a cry,
Still trailing music although reduced to the sigh

Connotation

Verse 1: The author writes, "A man steps out of sunlight, sunlight that streams like grace". In this test it shows how poetry can visually describe things that are usually underlooked by the human eye, such as the graceful streams in sunlight.
Verse 2: The author writes, "still gaping at blue sky
staked across the emptiness of space". In this text it shows how poetry can visually show and protray a mental image of the story being told. So that one can visualize what the author sees during that time.
Verse 3: The author writes, "into a history where shadows assume a human face." In this text it shows how poetry can become our eyes when we have gone blind. It can also put things in perspective of why certain things happen such as assuming behind every shadow is a face, rather than a human with a heart.
Verse 4: The author writes, "A man slips into silence
that began as a cry". In this text it shows how poetry can act as a voice for those marginalized by society. It can also act as a voice of clarity and reality, to notice our flaws and actions.
Verse 5: The author writes, "still trailing music
although reduced to the sigh". In this text the verse allows us to imagine and mentally hear a sound fading out as written in this poem.
Verse 6: The author writes, "of an accordion
as it folds into its case." In this text, it shows how poetry can allow the reader to visually imagine an action without actually seeing the action being performed.

This poem is written in third person , which highlights what the author sees as he watches a man. The author seems to notice all aspects of the situation by mentioning the sky, shadows, sound and sunlight. He expresses his own perspective of the surrounding element around the man. His voice shifts from calm, to questionable , to calm. For he talks about the streams of grace in the sunlight, to shadows that assume a human face, to an accordion as folds back into its case.
