Pre-assess during the engage stage, at the beginning of the unit.
Observe and collect anecdotal notes to determine student's language proficiency for that unit.
Examples:
*observing and listening
* check understanding expressed in language and gestures
*use probing questions or prompts to check comprehension and encourage langue use.
*Inquiry chart: T chart with "I wonder" and "I notice"

Science Notebooks are powerful to evaluate language use and academic content understanding. Can be used to diagnose their language levels and their growth over time. Visuals should be allowed within their entries. Such as a KWL chart as part of an entry.

Planning for Engage:
* Know student language proficiency level.
*Group students in small enough numbers to promote conversation.
* Study the curriculum and standards
* Determine their current level of background knowledge and build on it from there.
*To foster conversation and vocabulary development provide photos and other realistic visuals.
* Prepare why and how questions to elicit student understanding and record notes and actual student language that is being used.
