The process of open-disclosure should be a professional requirement that is secured in professional ethics. Empathetic and compassionate Communication should be used with all those involved in or affected by the patient safety incident. This is crucial to maintaining a healthy relationship with both the patient and health care provider and when applied well can alleviate anxiety and increase confidence and trust in the staff within a health care organisation.
