Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806)

The Lewis and Clark Expedition was an exploration of the land that was gained in the Louisiana Purchase. They brought back detailed accounts of what the new area looked like and discovered many unknown plants and animals. It also raised the excitement for Americans to travel west.

Increased Voting Rights (~1828)

The type of people who could vote became more broad, allowing more Americans to vote and resulted in the highest voter turnout ever up to that point. Before this each state had its own rules on who could vote and most of them only allowed white men with a lot of property. These were slowly taken away and allowed more people to vote.

Rise of the Democratic Party (~1828)

This party was made to back Andrew Jackson ahead of the 1828 election and helped him eventually win the election. This party eventually would become the dominant party in the United States and won every election but 2 from 1828-1856

Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears (1830 & 1831)

The Indian Removal Act was an act that let the President give land west of the Mississippi to Native American tribes who gave up their homeland. Some tribes did accept the offer but many did not which led to threats and eventually force. The Trail of Tears was the route that Native people were forced to take to the land set for them, many died while taking this brutal trail

Manifest Destiny (~1845)

"Manifest Destiny" was a term coined in 1845 and was the idea that the people of the United States were destined to expand across the entirety of North America. This was also used to justify things like forcing Native Americans off their land. This idea would also later intensify slavery issues and fuel a cause of the Civil War.

Invention of the Cotton Gin (1794)

The Cotton Gin was made to clean the seeds out of cotton quicker. This had many effects on cotton production and also was the justification of slavery for some people.

Mill Girls (1814)

The Mill Girls were girls from ages 15-30 who worked in large cotton factories. They lead the way for women working in the textile business. Their impact led to women holding almost 2/3rds of textile jobs in the United States by the late 1800s.

Completion of the Erie Canal (1825)

The Erie Canal covered 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo and at the time was the longest artificial waterway in North America. It cut time and costs to transport goods making trading much more accessible. This made New York City a very important port and also opened the western area of New York to more trade.

Rise of the Abolitionist Movement (~1830)

The Abolitionist Movement was an effort to end slavery in the United States. Fredrick Douglas was a big part of the movement and spoke in many places about slavery and also wrote some biographies. This movement brought the Unites States closer to Civil War and also help free slaves and make slavery illegal.

Seneca Falls Convention (1848)

This convention was the first convention held for the topic of women's rights. It was organized by 5 women who were also very involved in the abolitionist movement. This started the women's suffrage movement and was the starting point of women gaining the right to vote.
