“Euphoria” was my 1st best piece from last semester. This piece involved the connection between color and emotion, fluid lines/ strokes, and the importance of a facial expression. While recapping this piece I focused on the meaning that color played within this piece. I came up with the ideas that color represents connection with the human souls, color represents a connection with others, and color represents who we are and who we want to do. These ideas drove the main question for my 1st piece this semester “How is a relationship defined by color/ a color?

“Happy and Sad” was my 2nd best piece from last semester. This piece also involved the connection between color and emotion, fluid lines/ strokes, and the importance of a facial expression. While recapping this piece I focused on the meaning of a facial expression and its connection with color as well. I came up with the connection that facial expression tell a story. Facial expressions contain hidden emotions and feelings that aren’t as visible to others and connects with how color plays a part in how we want to be seen and how we feel. These ideas drove my idea for the connection between facial expressions and color.

Reticulation and Reduction was my 3rd best piece from last semester. This piece also involved the connection between color and emotion, facial expressions/ figures, and fluid lines/ strokes. While recapping this piece I connected it with my idea established from my second piece, a facial expression/ figure can tell a story. I connected this idea with how color defines how we feel with others as well as with ourselves. This lead to my idea that moments can be defined by color based on our emotions throughout our life.

A visual picture of my brainstorm process. For my brainstorm I started by comparing the similarities between each of my best pieces from last semester. I came up with three major concepts that would connect and inspire my next 3 pieces of art work. The connection of color with the human soul and how color defines who we are, how a facial expression can tell a story of an individual, and how color can portray moments within our lives. Throughout my brainstorming process I kept diving in deeper to each question and connection I was making between each piece. This helped me not only develope and evaluate my ideas but create an overall concept for my upcoming work. Within this brainstorm I mainly addressed the conceptual side of my ideas and there importance.

Below is a sketch on my initial concept for my 1st piece from my brainstorming process. For this first piece I address the question, How is a relationship defined by a color? This question came from the connection that color plays with who we are, how we act and feel, and the connection with the human soul. This piece address the connection color plays within our relationship and how it can define something bigger than ourselves. My concept for this piece is a moment within a relationship between a man( anger/ red) and a women (sadness/ blue). The couple represents red and blue and when they meet they create purple (their relationship). In this piece purple defines there relationship and how they act and feel around one another. There respective colors bleed into one another to show how they affect each other as well as there relationship.

Compared to my original sketch I made the portions of both of these faces bigger to match the portions of the size of the paper.

I continued this piece by selecting my color palette for the male face. I already knew I wanted the males color palette to consist of reds based off the emotion of anger. I selecting multiple red color pencils that varied in shades to represent my shadows, highlights, and skin color. I also grabbed a dark purple and brown to shade and use as my eyebrow color. I then proceeded to start coloring the male face. I started with the main shadows of the face mainly the eye area. I started with the eye area because I wanted to lay down my shadows to map out where I needed my highlights and neutral color. I also continued by filling in the mouth lines since this area also had intense shadow. I finished by mapping out the center of these two figures with light and dark purple. I decided to start filling in this area to create a better guide line for how far I needed to go with the color.

I continued this piece by further filling in the males face. I also started with the males face since I am left handed and I didn’t want to ruin the females face as I was working on the males. I mapped out the remaining shadows and highlights on his face including his nose and cheek bone. I then proceeded to fill in the space with my neutral red that acts as my initial skin tone. For the shadows on his face I used the dark red and lightly added dark purple to intensify the shadow. I used this technique by his eye as well as his cheek bone and mouth. I used a light almost salmon red and white to create my highlights and to intensify them (with the white).

I finished the males face by completing the remaining highlights and shadows on his face. I also filled in the teeth with white colored pencil and outlined them with dark purple since it is the color I will be using to fill in the space around the edges of the two faces. I then started to fill in the females face. For the female I knew I wanted a blue color palette to represent the color sadness. I chose four blue colored pencils ranging in shades to represent my highlights and shadows as well as a neutral skin tone. I began by mapping out the shadows of my females eye and nose. I decided to start here since these areas held heavy shadows and highlights. I also filled in my females eyelashes with a dark blue.

For my second piece I drew upon my second question within my brainstorm, “How can moments be defined by color?” I also further connected this to my original question of “How can color define a relationship?”I came upon this question from my reduction and Reticulation piece last semester. I drew upon how color in that piece represent different emotions and created an atmosphere that related with my figures relationship with herself. For this piece I wanted to layout 4 different colors yellow, green, red, and blue. These colors would lay out the connection/ moments throughout a relationship. The yellow would represent longing/ hope, green would represent envy, red would represent connection, and blue would represent contentment. With this layout I wanted the colors to be very fluid and bleed into each other to create an obvious connection. I then want to draw hands of contrasting colors to visually show the connection within this relationship and the interaction as well.
