Rumors of a disastrous plague far far away had reached Europe around about 1346, they were of the they were about the depopulation and huge number of deaths in India. about the mass space all the dead bodies took up and places that no one was left alive. To people of 14th century Europe China and India were remote fantastical lands of many weird occurrences. People were worried but weren't scared as they thought that the disease would never reach them.

The impact on society was huge the whole medieval system had changed as whole families had died within days, there was tons of confusion and instability that followed the Black Death the social balance was drastically changed as the Black Death had weakened the economic and social control of the nobility. Nobles had to pay serfs more and comply to their demands to keep them in work. A peasants revolt was started and nobles tried to obtain cheap work by increacing Hereditary dues. Hereditary dues are amounts of money owed to the next generation of a family. Below is an artists impression of what the streets looked like during the time of the plauge

There are many ways that medieval people could have done to prevent the Black Death but were uneducated about disease and cleanliness. Lots of people thought it spread through the air so they would burn lncense like juniper and rosemary to prevent infected air, others soaked their handkerchiefs in aromatic oils to cover their noses and mouths as protection from the 'infected' air, Pope Clement VI, fearing his safety had the idea of sitting between two big fires to ward away the plague this was actually a good idea as Yersinia Pestitis is killed by heat.

Killing more then 100 million people the Black Death had a massive impact on the lives of the infected. (usually ending them!) The infected were refused their last rites by Priests, had to endure weird and wacky treatments and either infect your family or die alone. This graph shows the number of deaths caused by the Black Death compared to some other significant events in history.

The impact on towns and cities over the time of the Black Death was huge. The Black Death is thought to have destroyed 30-60% of the population of Europe over the 2 years that it peaked. Towns and cities were wiped out within a week. Trading was less frequent as the tradespeople were either sick or dead, this stopped food and other goods from other countries being imported and exported and helped lower the economy. Below is the depopulation and recovery of the plague. That deep dip is when the Black Death happened and it took two hundred years for the population to recover.
