My reflection on this reading is that I really believe that the Jesuits are really doing something right because it is an organization that has lasted so many years. The author also gives us examples of great leaders who have been trained in Jesuit universities like Bill Clinton. I also agree that a leader is not a director or a manager, we must be leaders in our lives and in our daily lives. I also like the values instilled by the Jesuits, I think they are very deep values and create better people. That is why I believe that ITESO is one of the best universities in Mexico and I am honored and proud to belong to this university. Someday I also hope to be a leader for society and contribute to live in a better and healthier world for all.

Jesuit leadership - Karla Padilla Muñoz

The text narrates the way the Jesuits came to be the institution that they are today and it specifically talks about one of the most valuable lesions that they left: leadership and how to be a good leader. This text really resonates with me and the way I view life especially in the "principle" of love. I agree that without it, every action we make and every decision we take are pointless, meaning that without love, there is no purpose.

A phrase of Loyola that I personally loved reading is "...Everyone has a potential for leadership, and true leaders open this potential in others.” For me this means that leaders are not selfish and do not keep their virtues to themselves, rather, they offer to share their knowledge knowing that other around them will follow and subsequently, make other follow as well.

This principles come incredibly important for today’s leaders, since now more than ever the world is filled with selfish and unjust people, surrounded by unjust situations and unfair scenarios, which is when being a Jesuit-like leader comes in handy for the betterment of this Earth.

Let´s not shut ourselves to the fact that a religion is what gave fuel to this way of living. Let´s not blind ourselves and deny our neighbor from the good that could come out of handling ourselves (leadership-wise) as the Jesuits did.

The four principals that the jesuits based their way of working is very interesting. I think that those are four very important aspects of life in general that can help us not only in our business, but in our everyday life. Being self-aware helps understand the way we perceive the world and the way we interact with it. Ingenuity makes us think out of the box and this way we can give something new to the people and the world around us. Love is the way we are all able to connect and it gives us a better perspective about life, it lets us be more compassionate for others and lets us see the world in a better way. Lastly, heroism is something that may be harder to achieve, but for me this meant to not be afraid and fight for what you believe in, no matter how much people say it cannot be achieved. I really liked the reading and it made me think about how I would like to be a leader in my own company.

Marielle

My reflection on the text is that it sees a different way of taking leadership. I believe that in such a fast-moving, globalized world, human relationships, including leadership and the way we do business, have been badly reconfigured. We have forgotten in the face of economic issues the human relations, which is a social crisis because economic issues are on the integrity of life. The text refers to taking up other values, leaving aside the religious sphere of the Jesuits, they continue to maintain a humanistic approach. When I read the text, I didn't imagine wild capitalism, but a fair and comprehensive and beautiful treatment between humans. The author also talks about how knowing myself and love can change the economic relations not only between company-company, also in international terms. I think we should also add the environment as significant matter. And in times of crisis, idealism doesn't seem so insane.

Donnelly

I think the importance of being a great leader is being able to recognize the strength, weaknesses and values a person can have. Also, it is important to know how to identify each one and accept that sometimes you are going to share ways of thinking and sometimes you´re going to learn how to react to a different way of thinking. Learning how to manage yourself is the first step to dominate leadership.

I think everyone has the potential for leadership, you just have to work on things you have to reinforce and you will do it. I also agree that you don´t have to be a director or superior to be a leader, we are always being leaders in our daily life.

Finally, about the 4 principles I think love is the most important. Having love spirit can help you with all kind of people, to be happy about them and to bring them joy into their lives to keep them motivated and achieve their goals.

It is true that in these times it is necessary to fill yourself with information and open your mind. In the not too distante future we will be being leaders. To be leaders we need to cultivate information.

We are surrounded by successful people in the world that despite not preparing, there is also the other half who were examples of failures.

Lately I feel like we are living in a world in crisis and reaching the brink of caos.
In the text it mentions the four principles, for me it is the most important, Lowney said that based on love you get proposition and passion for ingenuity and heroism.

Like Lowney I think that love strengthens everything, both as companies, (financially speaking) religion and also most important for me, family.
When you get to be a leader you cannot forget having dedication and we have to be well focused on what we are looking for and be detected to obtain it.

-Cecilia Hubbard

Commentary on article about Jesuit Leadership

I believe the article centers around something that is very familiar to all of us. In ITESO you can see what these values are meant to construct. Even if this is not always the case, it does get involved in the general speech.

I really like the idea of creating leaders that work for “the greater good”, especially in a cut-throat world like ours. I believe the world lacks people that actually cares for others. However, situations like this pandemia can be overcome with this type of leadership.

As the author outlines, acting out of love really can be the catalyst for positive action. I would like to add another value to the conversation: empathy. Empathy generates understanding and love to one another. It helps us see the world from many new perspectives. In a divided world like ours, empathy is essential for reconciling different ideas and world views.

If we hope to move forward and make the world a better place for everyone, empathy and loving leadership is the path we need to follow.

Paula

For me, leadership means been an example for people, in that way people will follow your ideas, not you, what you represent. This is why i like the four principles of Jesuits Leaderships, it feels that it is what we need. Awareness of what is happening around us, the consequences of our acts. Ingenuity to solve problems, for the community. Love by making everything a loving act, not in a interested way. Heroism, conviction to do good. I really believes that it is what we need in our country.

- Antonio Rangel

The main idea of this article is something relatable for many of us, in most cases at least you can see its foundation here at ITESO.

Self awareness for me is Key because it's what motivates me and it should motivate others to be leaders in your own environment. Start by believing in yourself ,what you believe in, what can you do to make a change? Once you see someone that believes in himself, leadership becomes naturally.

Also i wanted to add something about Jesuits that i did not know; turns out that my Grandmothers dad, brother was a Jesuit, Here in Guadalajara. In the 1960´s He was the Rector of Instituto de Ciencias and by what my mom has told me about him what the author is writing about, it is true Jesuits have that native way of thinking and teaching.

Mariana Velasco
