If you encounter an animal that could be infected with rabies, it is crucial to steer clear of it and promptly report the incident to your local animal control agency. In the event of an animal bite, it is very important to seek immediate medical attention, as untreated rabies can be fatal. One more effective way to prevent rabies is to ensure that your pets are duly vaccinated against the virus. This is especially critical for dogs and cats, as they are the most common domestic animals that can contract and transmit rabies.

Once symptoms of rabies appear, there is no known cure, and the infection is almost always fatal. Therefore, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately if you are bitten by an animal that may carry rabies. In some cases, a vaccine can be given after a possible exposure to the virus to help prevent the onset of the disease. However, this must be administered immediately after exposure, ideally within 24 hours.

Rabies is usually transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. The most common way humans acquire rabies is through a bite from an infected animal. However, it is also possible to contract the virus if infected saliva comes into contact with an open wound or mucous membrane, such as the eyes or mouth. It is important to note that not all animals with rabies exhibit aggressive behavior. Some may appear tame or even friendly, but can still transmit the virus through their saliva. Therefore, it is important to exercise caution around all animals, especially those that are not familiar to you.
