Faruqi is opposed to the merging of SBS and the ABC as one broadcaster because of the lack of culturally diverse content from the ABC and within the board of directors in the ABC. He speaks about a lack of representation in the media industry and the fact that SBS does have shows that cater to a diverse audience. While I do agree that SBS and ABC should not merge into one broadcaster because of this, I disagree on some of the things he said. He spoke about media companies choosing not to hire culturally diverse Australians. This may be the case but in my experience, when I studied Media Comm at Uni, I was the only brown person in pretty much the whole course. In my experience, the ethnic families I know don’t really consider going into the media or there is only a small minority that do so. I wonder what demographic or ethnicities choose to do media courses in the first place and I feel there should be more research conducted about this.

Whilst the article rasies some meritorious points regarding the value of diversity within the media, the author is renowned for a lack of tolerance and bigotry to all persons that are white. (simply google Osman Faruqi tweets)

There is a misconseption that because two people are white, then their culture, knowledge and experiences are the same when in fact, as we are taught to believe for all people, no sinlge race should be treated as a homogenous group.
Diversity comes in many forms, simply increasing a particular trait as a defining characteristic as to who they are.

Equality of opportunity absolutely, but the example cited within the report that docking the pay of executives for failing to meet diversity targets in hiring practises-as a positive step for a national braodcaster- perhaps focus on quality content should be a more applicable standard. Then maybe, we could focus on diversity in programming- surely a better outcome for all.
