Personally, being the scientist I am, I feel Prodigy Math is an educational yet motivational game for students in grades 1-8. They can work individually to solve math problems to fight battles and win rewards. The math is tiered toward their needs and correlates with the Common Core State Standards, which will work well in the classroom. The theory behind the games makes sense, answer correctly and win prizes. This would motivate many elementary students. It is appropriate, free, and fun!

Theoretical Explanations

The theory behind Prodigy Math is when students answer math problems correctly they get rewarded, in this case they get rewarded with pets and spells. They can then use those to move through the Wizard world. They are motivated through the rewards which then makes them try harder to learn the math. If they do not answer correctly they back track and have to prove they know and understand the math questions. This also ensures learning is happening.

Prodigy can work to close the achievement gap, prepare for assessments, and drive outcomes using real time data. 11.6% more students met district standards using Prodigy. Along with working with Common Core Math Standards it is entertaining to students. The process of learning is basically as they play, difficulty is increased or decreased depending upon their answers and facility with the skills. If a student struggles with a concept, following questions will backfill the necessary skills. This helps students learn successfully and move forward in their game.

Prodigy Math is both motivational and educational. Students are motivated to answer the math questions correctly to earn spells, which they use to battle monsters as they move through different worlds on the way to Wizard Academy. Students can also work towards winning pets for themselves to have along the journey. The more math questions they answer correctly the more battles, spells, and pets they win.

My learning game I will be teaching you about today is called Prodigy Math. Prodigy Math covers content for grades 1-8 along with a diagnostic test to place students in the correct grade, embedded assessments, and automatic differentiation. Prodigy ensures that each one of your students succeed at their own pace. It is a role-playing game using a Pokemon-style wizardry theme. Students complete math questions to level up (become more powerful) and ultimately defeat Crios, Prodigy’s main antagonist. (Video explaining game content below.)

Everything your students work on in Prodigy is reported back to you in real time. Quickly see which skills your students have mastered, and where they may need some additional support. All math, reporting, and access to the program is free, which is a huge plus for you as a teacher.
