The theme of justice is seen through several uses of figurative language, but the strongest examples are demonstrated by conversations between Scout and Atticus. They are discussing the National Recovery Act (NRA), and Scout asks who "killed it," and Atticus alludes the supreme court when he replies " nine old men" (Lee 254).

"Firstly, people had removed from their store windows and automobiles the stickers that said NRA—WE DO OUR PART. I asked Atticus why, and he said it was because the National Recovery Act was dead. I asked who killed it: he said nine old men" (Lee 254).

It is our church, ain't it, Miss Cal” (Lee 48).

In a time period where people were being segregated, and white men treated black men as if they weren’t human beings, it is odd to see a white person being picked on for their skin color. Calpurnia had decided to take Jem and Scout to her church, where mostly black people congregated. This situation is a good example of Scout learning about perspective. Lula, a young black girl, tells Capurnia that “[she] ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillun [there]”, which makes Scout reassess the situation (Lee 48).

We also know that she is comparing Atticus to the devil, because she is trying to make a point. Miss Maudie says this when Atticus comes home for lunch, and finds that Scout has built herself a fort and is crouching behind it, while aiming a rifle at her while she’s tending to her flowers. When Atticus runs across the street to inform Miss Maudie that she is in “considerable peril,” or vulnerable, she replies by saying that he is “
the devil from hell.” (chapter 10)

In Harper Lee’s novel, while Atticus is defending his client Tom Robinson, Atticus is spealing over the case and making fact of Tom Robinson being innocent. Atticus appeals to the court, “but there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal... there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein” (Lee 223). Throughout this submission Atticus begins to piece the case together and conclude that it had been Mr. Ewell who had beaten Mayella, although the jury had still decided Tom Robinson to be guilty after Atticus had made many valid contributions to the case. This is an accurate example of an allusion in which Atticus summons to the jury a reference two of the most famous men in the current time frame.

The theme of inequality is used many times in the book. This is most strong when Miss Maudie says “T’s morbid, watching a poor devil on trial for his life. Look at all those folks, it’s like a Roman carnival” (Lee 173). Roman carnivals were events that happened in the Roman time period. One part of this event was watching pigs jump off a cliff. Although Tom doesn’t die until he is in prison, the people are waiting to see if he will get the death penalty during the trial.
