I think Maverick chose his old King Lord gang friends to protect his family instead of the police because he had negative experiences with the police during his life and already spent time in prison. He doesn't have a good relationship with the police and may be afraid they might also hurt his family.

Maverick chose his old gang friends king Lard to protect his family from Maverick and to protect Starr and if he goes with the police I don't think It's a good idea to protect his family from him I think if he goes with the police he would lose the Starr. family

I think he prefer to have his old friends rather than the police because police will not give them enough safety from the person that is trying to stop Starr from talking.

I think Maverick chose that because He has faith in his old friends that probably they spent their time together and all that, so He did not choose the police because he doesn’t have a good relationship with the police or something bad would happen to his family.

I think he doesn’t believe cups anymore that’s why he decided to ask his friend for protection but in someway you must be sure that you’re asking your friend for for help sometimes people change you won’t like to be protecting your family and his family is not on protection so if they trust each other and will be any problem if not well something must happen in anyway

Maverick knew that the police were not going to protect him as well as his childhood friends, and maverick knew that some policeman had negative thoughts about Starr because of khalil’s Death and racism they have towards his family.
