Interview With Black Lives Matter Representative Joel

I'm here with Black Lives Matter representative Joel Palacios. Joel, What is the Black Lives Matter Movement? How and when did it start?
Black Lives Matter is a movement for the equal treatment of African Americans. After the abusive killings of multiple black men and women, people knew it was time to step up and take a stand to the police force and those who treat blacks as less than themselves. Therefore, Black Lives Matter was founded on July 13, 2013.

What are the goals of the Black Lives Matter Movement?
We want to rebuild the black liberation movement and to help the lives of all black people who are treated with less respect than people of other colors. We also want to change negative stereotypes and connotations of African Americans.

What are some accomplishments of the Black Lives Matter Movement?
I strongly believe we made an accomplishment in Florida. The group ended Angela Corey’s reign as a state attorney. Corey remains infamous for failing to convict Trayvon Martin’s killer George Zimmerman while prosecuting Marissa Alexander, a Black woman who didn’t hurt anyone when firing a warning shot at her abusive ex-husband. It was necessary to remove her and we did.

So Joel, some people consider your movement a reincarnation of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Why do you think people are making this comparison?
Back before the passage of the civil rights act of 1964 some restaurants, hotels, and theaters served only white customers. Some landlords refused to rent houses, apartments, or businesses to racial minorities. The Civil rights act of 1964 ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement.

I think people are saying this because today we are bringing the issue to the light again and we are spreading it across the country, much like they did in the '60s. Today African Americans are suffering just like they did back then. Police harass, falsely accuse, beat and kill blacks across the country and Black Lives Matter is trying to stop it, just like Martin Luther King Jr.

What were the goals for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement and what are the goals of your movement today?

The goal back in the '60s was to end racial segregation and discrimination and to secure federal citizenship rights for blacks. They were trying to set an equal playing field for blacks.

Today we realize even with everything they did we still are looked down on so the goal hasn't changed much. We seek to expose institutional systems of violence and racism targeted at African American populations. We also wish for people of all races and colors to be treated equal.

How is the Black Lives Matter Movement an example of Political and Social change?

Political change is defined as a change in power which leads to the change of a country. We see ourselves as the voice of the people and therefore, true leaders. We are causing political change as police now have to wear body cameras while on active duty to ensure there is no violence against Americans making it safer for the public. We are causing social change in the views of the people by exposing the institutional racism in the country and protesting so people can treat everyone equally.
