The vaccine was invented in 1953, and up until the mid 1950’s, testing was done. On April 12, 1955, the results were announced and the inactivated polio vaccine, commonly known as IPV, was licensed. The vaccine was invented to prevent the infection of the fatal disease known as Poliomyelitis. The impact of the polio vaccine was positive, as it helped prevent the spread of polio and stopped the (at the time) ongoing global polio pandemic.
