This is a example of police brutality because Rashad was in a gas station and the cashier thought he was robbing the store, the police officer that was standing there put him in cuffs walked him outside and started beating on him. The officer then hits him mistakes his flinch for signs of resistance and continues to beat him up in the parking lot. The story continues to follow this theme through the whole story and uses it to express Rashad's family's emotions. A quote that proves this is "Because racism was alive and real as shit. It was everywhere and all mixed up in everything, and the only people who said it wasn’t, and the only people who said, “Don’t talk about it” were white. Well, stop lying. That’s what I wanted to tell those people. Stop lying. Stop denying. That’s why I was marching. Nothing was going to change unless we did something about it. We! White people!” This quote explains that we don't want to talk about the issue even though we know what is happening.
