In all American Boys the main character Rashad is beat by a police officer, and has to go to the hospital. This is a example of police brutality because Rashad was in a gas station and the cashier thought he was robbing the store, the police officer that was standing there put him in cuffs walked him outside and started beating on him. A example I found on police brutality is. This is telling the public the hurt that police brutality has on society.

In my book one of the main characters Quinn has to make the difficult decision of his friend or the right thing to do. Quinn was there when Rashad was getting beat up. He wants to tell everyone what happened but he doesn't know if he should. During the end of the story he ends up helping Rashad get his story out there. This picture explains how hard it was for Quinn to make his decisions.

One of the themes is Activism because near the middle and end they start planning a protest about what happened to Rashad. So when he got out they could help him get is story out there so people know about it. A example I found of this was. This explains how activism works because, when you act you can change the way something is.

All American Boys uses racial profiling in the beginning when Rashad is falsely accused of shoplifting and assault of a white woman when he is trying to grab his phone. The officer then hits him mistakes his flinch for signs of resistance and continues to beat him up in the parking lot. The story continues to follow this theme through the whole story and uses it to express Rashad's family's emotions. A quote that proves this is "Because racism was alive and real as shit. It was everywhere and all mixed up in everything, and the only people who said it wasn’t, and the only people who said, “Don’t talk about it” were white. Well, stop lying. That’s what I wanted to tell those people. Stop lying. Stop denying. That’s why I was marching. Nothing was going to change unless we did something about it. We! White people!” This quote explains that we don't want to talk about the issue even though we know what is happening.
Quote fromhttps://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/11/25/457168819/all-american-boys-a-young-adult-book-about-a-police-beating-and-a-hard-choice
