Born in 1933, in Mississippi, James Meredith attended segregated schools his whole young life. He later joined the U.S Air Force in 1951. While in the service he earned credits to take college level courses. He started by going to Jackson State, historically a black college, but he wanted to go to Ole Miss. His application to Ole Miss took about 2 years to go through, but when it did he became the first black student at Ole Miss. For all the trouble that Meredith went through to get into, and be at Ole Miss, he was only at the school for 10 months.

James Meredith was accepted to Ole Miss in January, 1961. He was the first person to integrate the school. It being Ole Miss in the 60's, the campus rioted because they did not want to integrate. The riot left roughly three hundred people injured, but only 2 dead. The governor of Mississippi had to send the National Guard in to calm the riot and to maintain peace. JFK had to send the Federal Marshall's in to protect Meredith so he could be safe while at school.

Meredith wanted to be the first person to integrate Ole Miss so others would have an easier time going to primarily white schools. He knew that someone had to be the first, and he knew that it would be hard, but he wanted to do it to make others lives easier. He wanted to fight for racially equality in anyway he could. The integration of Ole Miss is important to the civil rights movement because it showed that the desegregation of schools was possible.
