He later joined the U.S Air Force in 1951. While in the service he earned credits to take college level courses. He started by going to Jackson State, historically a black college, but he wanted to go to Ole Miss. His application to Ole Miss took about 2 years to go through, but when it did he became the first black student at Ole Miss. He was the first person to integrate the school. It being Ole Miss in the 60's, the campus rioted because they did not want to integrate. The riot left roughly three hundred people injured, but only 2 dead. The governor of Mississippi had to send the National Guard in to calm the riot and to maintain peace. He knew that someone had to be the first, and he knew that it would be hard, but he wanted to do it to make others lives easier. He wanted to fight for racially equality in anyway he could.
