Why Am I Here?

I am presently working toward applying for PhD programs and, ultimately, teaching writing at the college-level. In the short-term, I am determined to continue presenting research on the benefits of including business professional skills in first-year composition courses. I am relentless in my pursuit to become a better writer and to also help others become better writers - understanding themselves and their experiences through writing. Overall, I am here to follow my passion and gain insight into course design and best practices for using literature in composition courses. I want to influence the next generation of writers.

Noodle

This is my dog, Noodle. He is almost three years old and half Dachshund, half Boxer. I adopted him from the shelter in my hometown when he was a puppy and he's essentially ran the house ever since. We love to hike together and just finished the WNY Hiking Challenge. He has two cat sisters - Coconut (3) and Pepper (9).

My name is Laura Lee Tingley and I am in my first semester of the Teaching Writing graduate certificate program. I currently hold an A.A. in Creative Writing, B.A. in Writing and M.A. in English. My hope is to get accepted into a PhD Rhetoric & Composition program for fall 2025. I am currently moving from Rochester, NY to Denver, CO to live with my best friend and focus on school. Outside of the already mentioned hobbies, I also enjoy kickball, yoga, barre and anything to do with my hands.

As a hiker and walker of the Earth, I am passionate about nature and our connection to it. I care deeply about climate change, the people/animals affected and caring for the place which sustains us. I am keen on history; understanding the past, learning from our mistakes. I am lit on fire by relationships; familial, romantic, friendly. Community, unity and camaraderie are ultimately what drives me as a person.

My Languages

Language is a funny thing, really. There are a multitude of rules, yet only one truly matters - whether you convey the message you hope to get across. As such, I believe there is no right or wrong way of utilizing language and how we use it to express ourselves in various facets of life. At home, my language is evocative of rural America. At school and work, more professional, to be expected. On social media, I am sporadic; sometimes cryptic, sometimes dry and often sentimental. I tend to keep my social media life fairly private. Where I am most interesting, however, is always in my journal. I am someone wholly different, to the extent where it feels like Virginia Woolf narrates my thoughts.

The recent feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake caused me to deep-dive on Lamar's writing. His use of double entendre completely floors me and I look forward to using his writing in future composition courses.
