The third text, “School uniforms: turning our kids into soulless conformists” is an article written for The Guardian by Suzanne Moore.

The article is very subjective as the author takes her starting point in her own life, and gives her own opinion

She uses pathos to appeal to our emotions by making us see, among other things, how the uniforms transform students into one big mass, and prevent them from expressing themselves.

Therefore she gives a negative view on the issue, as she believes uniforms take away children’s individualities.

Setting and narration

This story takes place at bench near a railroad
station in London. This is the physical location that the story takes place in,
but the setting changes throughout via flashbacks, an impression of the
environment the protagonist lives in. The railroad station itself is not
described in great detail and doesn’t create a notable atmosphere.

Time-wise, the duration of the short story
spreads from the arrival of the twilight until it is fully dark. The narrator
we meet in the short story is omniscient. The point of view lies upon Eddie,
and the story is centralized around him, his thoughts, and his actions. It
begins in medias res, during the middle of the narrative. This means that the
description of the characters is kept a mystery until later in the story. The
tension keeps getting built up throughout the story and can be seen as Eddie’s
degree of anger increases. His point of no return occurs near the end of the
story, when he decides not to get on the train and instead walks away.
