BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear runs for 90 weeks in full time mode. It is divided into 3 stages over 3 academic years. Each stage lasts 30 weeks.

Entry to this course will also be determined by assessment of your portfolio.

Year two - continue development of work process and presentation skills. Competitions, live projects, industry events. Combine elements of traditional tailoring techniques with contemporary gender fluid design - explore and apply technique of creative pattern cutting concepts into final garments.

Year three - self-directed final year takes a holistic approach - producing a body of work supported by reflective and critical writing, developing graduate fashion collection. Live projects enhance your portfolio in preparation for employment.

LCF offers students specialist facilities, equipment, tools and resources across 6 London sites:

- Facilities include the biggest fashion library and archive in the UK, sample and sewing rooms, a 3D modelling room, cosmetic science labs, visual merchandising suites and make-up studios.

- If you study an LCF fashion design and technology course such as womenswear, tailoring, contour or pattern-cutting, you will have access to facilities across our different sites. Design and making facilities are at our Curtain Road site and John Prince's Street, while textiles equipment can is at Lime Grove and pattern-cutting and tailoring at Mare Street.

- If you study jewellery, footwear or accessories at London College of Fashion you will mainly be based at Golden Lane, near Barbican. While our John Prince's Street plays host to our fashion library.

If you don't meet the entry requirements for a BA, you can study this course as an extended, four-year programme. You'll begin by taking a foundation year which prepares you for a successful transition to the BA degree.

Will learn to develop technical and sewing skills and explore surface design in textiles such as printing and other types of experimental fabrications.

> Students choosing to study on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design with Sandwich Year degree course have the opportunity (between levels 5 and 6) to take a full year industry placement schedule, gaining first-hand experience of the industry and develop their understanding of professional practice. The Placement Year is facilitated by both a module leader and the student.

The first year of the Fashion Design BA at Westminster concentrates on introducing the student to a variety of skills and techniques related to all areas of 2D and 3D fashion practice. Design, research, illustration, cut, construction, print, and CAD are all covered.

Research is fostered through a variety of methods including visits to London Fashion Week, fashion shows, exhibitions, sketchbooks, and industry visits.

There are lessons in life drawing and illustration so that students understand proportion in 2D as well as 3D. Students undertake a range of design work spanning both conceptual and commercial briefs.

Both the costume design and interpretation specialisms will encourage you to build your confidence in both traditional and innovative approaches to costume design and realisation. You will also explore new and emerging media and digital presentation techniques. 

Live projects ensure you gain valuable industry experience throughout your study.

Optional Diploma between year 2 and 3

Between year 2 and 3 you can opt to undertake the Diploma in Professional Studies or the UAL Diploma in Creative Computing. Whilst these Diplomas are an optional aspect of the course, they are designed as an integrated and assessed part of your journey through the course.

Fashion is multifaceted and ever-evolving. Our programme reflects this.

As shown in our annual DesignBook portfolio-building projects, we are renowned for upholding high standards of fashion drawing and presentation skills, helping you with understanding brand development and what it takes to shine in a creative business.

You will also develop a variety of technical and pattern-cutting skills - including creative cutting, small-scale cutting, tailoring and outerwear - and encouraged to develop innovations in fabrics, garment manufacture and finishings.

Ultimately, the final year offers you the opportunity to fully incorporate your design strengths into your graduate fashion collection, which can be explored through perspectives of accessory-led design, menswear, womenswear, knitwear and surface-led design.

Facilities and resources

The Fashion workshops are equipped for a mixture of fabric sewing and pattern-cutting processes.

As well as being a space for working by hand and embroidery, there are a variety of industrial sewing and knitting machines, irons, and overlockers available for use.

Fashion students benefit from having their own allocated studio space for their design work, with the workshops being the place where you can bring your ideas to life. These workshops are predominately used by Fashion students, but students from other programmes can access facilities after having appropriate inductions.

While students are encouraged to learn to construct and assemble garments independently as they progress through their programme of studies, expert support is available from Technical Learning Services staff members who are on hand at all times to offer help and guidance as you work.

The textiles workshops are equipped for traditional flat-bed screen printing, digital textile printing and fabric dyeing.

The space benefits from having large print-beds for working with metres of fabric at a time, as well as easy access to the dye lab from the main workshop.

A hands-on way of learning and creating work is encouraged. You will learn all aspects of basic screen printing techniques, and in later years of study will work with more complex processes such as devoré and discharge. Expert support and supervision is available from Technical Learning Services staff members who are on hand to offer help and guidance as you work.
