Limited to one stage:

It was shown at that time that if a waman had a family and was a housewife; she is not welcome to continue with her dreams and find a job. This is clearly shown when Betty struggles with feminism as she and her friend Francine Hanson discuss their typical day-to-day housewifely concerns. Moreover, Betty's hands go numb and she loses control while driving once she sees her neighbor moving boxes into the house. This shows how miserable Betty is. It is clear that it was not the life she was meant to have led. She was also offered a modelling job and wanted to achieve her dreams and work; but dreams never truly included a family. So, she continues to hide her misery from her family, learns to accept it, and hides her dreams away from reality. This is the stage where women were limited by either being a housewife and taking care of the family or by being what they dream to be and achieving their goals in life.

Gender stereotypes (Voices never heard):

Women back in the days never had a voice. It was all about men's decision that is taken into consideration. Besides denying women's voice and barely sharing opinions, they were also limited by the words chosen to speak. For example, in episode one, while talking about business and running ideas in the company for Menken's department store, Rachel Menken talks about wanting the store to be the next chanel and after arguments have occurred, Don gets fed up by Rachel being sarcastic. He yells: " I'm not gonna let a woman talk to me like this." This deeply shows that although Rachel gave her opinion and talked freely, her words still got shut down and disagreed. In addition, it also shows that if she were a man, he would've let him talk in the same manner she did. It all goes back to the fact that she's a woman, so he storms out of the room to avoid her. This clearly shows gender stereotype where women are viewed in the light of what "should" they say and reveal instead of showing who they are and prove their point.

It is known that in the 1960's there was a difference in earnings between women and men in the workplace. Women were paid less no matter how hard they work or even if they were to work at an average same as men, they would still be paid less. But, what about the money they make? In Mad Men, Peggy, Don, and Pete are hungry for them. For Don money is happiness and he's in a well position to earn that; as for Pete he shmoozes to compete with Don in order to get his position. However, he is still paid much more than poor Peggy. Peggy in the episode was bold enough to ask for a $5 dollar week raise. In "ladies room", Peggy is excited to get her first paycheck but Joan claims it's the "rubber fumes from the envelope seal" marking her giddy, which supposedly shouldn't be much happy as she is not paid that much.
