Remember: It is your responsibility to work within your scope of practice!

It is important for you to ensure your practice educator is assigned at the beginning of your placement. Please ensure you contact your placement before commencing to ensure an educator has been assigned to you on your first day.

Additionally, you will need to ensure that your orientation and initial interview are completed ideally on the first day. As PARE is your responsibility we encourage you to make sure that this is carried out timely, and that any concerns are raised early enough for your assessor assist.

All learners are expected to partake in the service hours of your placement environment (e.g. the 24 hour / 7 days a week shift pattern)

Please be respectful to the LEELs who complete your off duty.

Any changes to the off duty need to be discussed with the LEELs or Ward Manager to ensure adequate supervision and support for learners on each shift.

It is the learners responsibility to report sickness / absence to your placement area prior to your shift. Upon returning to practice please contact the team to inform them of your return.

Please ensure you follow the university guidance in reporting absence.

• Ensure clothes are suitable for work purposes, are clean and in a good state of repair, always maintaining a standard of professionalism.

• Clothes should be free from strong smells, for example, body odour, cigarettes and vapes, etc.

• Shoes must be closed toe in line with health and safety policy, apart from staff working in an office environment.

Examples of clothing deemed unacceptable for non-uniformed staff

• Jeans*/cargo trousers

• Jeggings/leggings (unless covered by a tunic/dress)

• T-shirts with any offensive logo

• Jogging bottoms

• Shorts*

• Camouflage

• Miniskirts/dresses

• Sun, beach or spaghetti strap dresses/tops

• Any clothing that is overly revealing of the cleavage, stomach, midriff or thighs is unacceptable

• Sweatshirts* or hooded tops

• Flip flops

• Sports wear

• Halter neck or strapless tops or dresses

• Socks with offensive logo

*These items may be acceptable in some circumstances where agreed with the manager, due to the nature of the work

If you are not following the correct uniform policy, you may be asked to leave placement and return when you are adhering to policy.

Student Nursing Associate Apprentices do not follow the academic calendar of self funded (direct entry) SNA's and have a set University Day.

The University Day consists of 6.5 hours of university teaching and 1.5 hours of self-directed learning. This equates to 7.5 hours per week or on occasion a block of 7.5 hours of University Days within a week.

As an Apprentice Learner you will also have a Placement Review Meeting (PRM) facilitated by the University (PRM) usually 12 weeks after commencing of each Semester.

Any Practice Supervisor or your Practice Assessor can complete your placement induction and your initial interview. This must be documented in  your Practice documentation 

 The ‘daily supervisors’ will contribute to the overall assessment of your progress through comments on your Learning Log, discussion, and Practice Assessment Documentation

 SNAA's will have approximately 100 hours of Protected Learning Time Theory within each Semester.

This will be evidenced by:         

•  Supernumerary periods: totalling 4 weeks within at the start of your first placement

• Putting Practice into Context Teaching days (PCC) delivered by the SNA Team equating to one day per week for 4 weeks at the beginning of programme

• Protected teaching days facilitated by Student Nursing Associate Team

•Dedicated self directed Portfolio day at the end of each Semester

•Other Spokes and learning in Practice

If you are off sick from University this is classed as sickness with the Trust

Do not attend University if you are off sick in Practice

Hours and Annual leave:

● Check e-roster to ensure it is all correct and up to date
● Book annual leave through Employee Online plaform
● Take Annual Leave breaks regularly throughout the year

Break in Learning (BiL)

4 weeks away from university or practice will automatically trigger a BIL
 A band 2 HCSW position will be requested but is not guaranteed

You may return into a different Cohort depending on length of BiL

Bank Work/NHSP

Do not bank on your current placement area
Do not attend a bank shift whilst off sick from your placement area

Do not wear your TNA Uniform when undertaking NHSP “bank” work as a HCSW

Caring for you as an Employee

Access to timely support for your difficulties is important, therefore MFT offers an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), provided by Health Assured, which offers confidential 24-hour support. EAP can be used for support regarding a range of emotional issues such as stress, anxiety and depression as well as practical issues such as housing concerns, financial concerns, and alcohol issues.
