         <description><![CDATA[<div>Providing a welcoming environment to students is essential. If the students are afraid or uncomfortable, they will not be willing to take risks or make mistakes. However, if the teacher provides a familiar routine and stable, comfortable environment, the students have a much easier transition and they are able to learn.<br>Some ways to make ELLs feel welcome are:<br>-pronounce their names correctly<br>-learn a few words in their language<br>-display student work<br>-keep a classroom library with books of various topics and reading levels<br>-offer books about the students' homelands<br>-make sure students know their backgrounds are welcome and appreciated<br>-most importantly, SMILE!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Over 10% of students are ELLs, which means that all teachers need to be imparting language skills to their students. Two important aspects of teaching ELLs are to be aware and to be supportive. <br>In being aware, the teacher needs to be aware of their students' backgrounds and social and emotional needs, they need to be aware of how 1st and 2nd languages are learned, they need to be aware of both social and academic English language proficiency, and they need to be aware of the language of their content, especially if it contains words that may have more than one meaning, such as "plot" or "table."<br>In supporting her students, the teacher needs to make sure that each student is participating each day through speaking, writing, reading, and listening. The teacher can also support her lessons by employing strategies that match language proficiency, as well as by using manipulatives. Finally, collaboration is a big support for both teachers and students.</div>]]></description>

These strategies include techniques such as helping students be aware of the learning process (learning how to learn), building on previous knowledge, making connections between what they learn and how to apply it, and various forms of modeling. ELL strategies such as these are necessary because ELL students tend to feel frustration in some classroom environments because they do not experience the support they need and fall behind their peers.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Quick Classroom Tips for Helping ELLs</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Most of these "quick tips" (though not the same as Q-tips or Quik-Trips) are found in the other links; this video does a nice speedy summary of practical applications. First, visual aids and gestures are very important for all students, but especially for ELLs. Some examples are manipulatives and graphic organizers. Second, students need time to process their thoughts and words. Give them adequate time and silence. I found it fitting that that section of the video took 36 seconds, with about 30 seconds of that being "wait time." It felt like an eternity, but it was a great form of modeling the proper amount of time needed. Finally, making connections to prior knowledge and familiar words or experiences is important.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Application of Content</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Three strategies that I gained while watching these videos which I hope to implement someday include:<br><br>1. Speaking loud enough for the students to hear well and enunciating well. Though it was not explicitly stated in the video, I noticed that in the first link, Ms. Prentice was very careful to enunciate. Though I have been told that I already have a "teacher voice" when I give talks or teach religious ed., I also do not open my mouth and enunciate very well. I need to work on enunciating clearly because at the schools where our Sisters teach, <em>many</em> of the students are ELLs.<br><br>2. I will also make sure to keep my classroom library stocked with both English and bilingual books at a variety of reading levels and over a variety of topics. I am taking a Children's Literature course right now, and I am trying to find good bilingual books to use, especially books in Spanish and Vietnamese, because the majority of the ELL students we teach are from Mexico or Vietnam.<br><br>3. Another strategy I will try to implement is to relate the content to the student's previous knowledge. This means that I will need to do a little more research when planning lessons, possibly looking more deeply into the students' cultures, past experiences they had in previous grades, what else we have done that year, or what they are working on in other subjects or with specials teachers.</div>]]></description>
