Another way it created competition is that it was also used to see which of the two countries had the better economies and tech. It was also a way for them to battle out with their ideologies. The final way it heightened competition was spurring on other competitions. The space race started with ballistic missiles. And finally it advanced technology in so many ways that it could be used in more normal life.
