Sustainable cities means the creation of career and business opportunities, of safe and affordable housing, and the building of resilient societies and economies. This involves investment in public transport, green public spaces and improving urban planning.
This is important because by 2050 two-thirds of all humanity will be urban. Due to this rapid growth, many people in developing countries are living in slums, meaning that it is extremely important that a sustainable development is achieved.

In Asunción, Paraguay, during the COVID-19 pandemic; like in many other cities, people started questioning the importance of seeking sustainable transformation in cities that have developed quickly during the past decades. For this reason, the initiative “Association of Metropolitan Area Municipalities” was launched. Due to problems with transportation connected to the pandemic, a 600 km bicycle lane was created to connect Asunción to all its metropolitan area; this initiative is name “Cycling for Climate”. Other transportation services have also been improved, they are now very safe, there are 30 sustainable bus shelters throughout the metropolitan area. There are comfortable seats, good lighting, and also a Wi-Fi connection. UNDP is also working on a project to ensure that nothing is wasted, they are starting a lot of innovative solutions for waste management, and Asunción is recycling a lot more; the impact is already noticeable. *

* A big problem has always been green spaces, but now, due to the pandemic, people have realised how important they are. This is why in Asunción they are starting to clean out all green spaces, and are training park rangers to fight against the common forest fires that are present around the city. Another aim is to bring back five migratory birds that are now rarely seen. The many improvements that have now taken place in Asunción show the world how when citizens are protagonist of change, it is easy to make a greener and healthier environment for a better quality of life in the urban space.
