Health means to me beyond the mere absence of illness; it is a positive state characterized by vitality, energy, and a sense of purpose. Health is not a static endpoint but a continuous journey, influenced by genetics, lifestyle choices, environmental conditions, and socio-economic factors.
Critical analysis of health also necessitates a recognition of health disparities and inequalities that exist within and between populations. Achieving health equity requires addressing systemic barriers to access and opportunities while promoting policies and interventions that ensure everyone has the chance to attain their highest level of health.

As a kid, I used to see my mum making this dish. When she used to cook the bread, she taught me about feeding and respecting the guests at my door.

Country focus: Myanmar
Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia, also known as Burma. As per the Refugee Council of Australia, one of the highest populations of refugees living in Australia is from Myanmar. By using the Australian Refugee Health Practical Guide, three main health concerns that are affecting the health of refugees in Australia are:

  1. Hepatitis C- Hepatitis C affects the liver and causes inflammation and it is more common among migrants from countries like Burma (2.8%). According to the WHO (2023), Hepatitis C is treated with antiviral drugs like sofosbuvir and daclatasvir.

  2. Schistosomiasis- Infection caused by a parasitic worm in water and prevalent in Burma. Its presence is identified by blood, urine, or stool tests in Australia. This disease is without symptoms and leads to renal failure. Anti-parasitic medications like Praziquantel were found to be a very effective treatment for this disease.

  3. Malaria- It is a parasitic infection caused by mosquitoes. Myanmar also falls in the category of countries with malarious areas. Malaria can be tested with both thick and thin blood films and an antigen-based rapid diagnostic test (RDT). Artemether-lumefantrine treatment is one of the proven methods to treat malaria.

References:
1. Key issues for refugees from Myanmar (burma) - refugee council.

Kabaddi is a popular contact sport that originated in India. It is a team sport that combines elements of wrestling, tag, and endurance. The game is played by two teams, each trying to score points by sending a "raider" into the opponent's territory, while the defending team tries to prevent them from returning to their side. Kabaddi may have a substantial influence on a person's physical and mental health (Singh, 2020). It stimulates cognitive skills such as problem-solving, and decision-making. Also, boosts self-confidence and self-esteem.

References:
Singh, R. (2020, January 9). Relationship of motor abilities with performance of male Kabaddi players.

For me, the most significant aspect of this competency standard 12.3 was effective communication with people from different backgrounds like refugees/ migrants. Initially, I was not confident about the way of communicating with people from diverse ethnicities. Having learned about the techniques of actively addressing client's concerns, I now feel much more capable of providing compassionate and effective care to refugee populations.
The skill of effective communication is not just about conveying information but also about building trust, showing empathy, and respecting the cultural context of the individuals you are serving.
Creating an inclusive and culturally sensitive work environment benefits not only refugees but the entire organization by promoting diversity and innovation.

References:
1.

Phulkari is a traditional style of embroidery that originated in the Punjab, India. The word "Phulkari" is derived from two Punjabi words: "phul," which means "flower," and "kari," which means "work." Phulkari, therefore, translates to "flower work," and it is known for its intricate and colorful floral embroidery. Phulkari can include geometric patterns and abstract designs (Kaur, 2021). Phulkari continues to be a cherished and iconic part of Punjabi culture, and it represents both the artistry and the rich heritage of the Punjab region.

References:

1. Kaur, M. Sikhism promotes values of humility, selflessness, and devotion to God. Sikhism had ten human Gurus, from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
