Maria is a young girl who is forced to serve as a maid/servant in her own home after her mother dies and father remarries an evil woman. Her new mom and stepsisters are rude and arrogant, and they treat her as if she is not a part of the family. Later, a Philippino Prince wishes to marry and throws a party to find a wife. Unfortunately, Maria does not have any beautiful clothes so she could not attend the ball. Maria comes across a crab who tells her to bury the shells under a garden and it will grow a tree that will grant her wishes. She does this and wishes for beautiful clothes to attend the ball. Like Cinderella she attends the ball, meets the prince and falls in love. She leaves quickly and loses her slipper. Once the prince finds her and the slippers a match they get married.

Women in the Philippines face violence, inequality and discrimination like Maria did in the story. The story depicts Maria as having to get married to be free of her family. It is common in the Pilipino culture for a woman's role to be a mother, wife and housekeeper. The crab in the story represents a common ingredient in Filipino cuisine. Maria, Rosa, And Damiana were main characters in the story and are considered very common Pilipino names.

The moral of the story is about kindness and determination. That even though your treated poorly, if you continue to stay kind and work hard you will be rewarded with a good life. Also the story shows that being cruel to people will eventually lead to a life of regret.

In this music video, Marry You by Bruno Mars, it's about two people who are wanting to marry each other. This song reminds me of Maria and the prince because of the similarities in the story line. The way Bruno Mars dances all night with his Cinderella is identical on how Maria and the prince couldn't stop dancing till she left. They were both so passionate about marrying each other that they would do anything in their power to get married, even if there were risks.
