One concern is that the students who do not participate in sport regularly seem quite nervous and hesitant about physical education.

Athletics in Ireland has a long and proud history. The first national championships were organised in College Park on July 7th, 1873 and have been held every year since. Athletics Ireland is the National Governing Body for track & field, cross country, race walking and road running in Ireland. On the track, Ireland had produced numerous World and Olympic champions across all disciplines of the sport and is one of the most active contributors to the sport at international level. ((Athletics Ireland, 2015) Within the P.E environment, the learners will be exposed to the various aspects of athletics and the primary fundamental movement skills of running, jumping and throwing will be developed. This structured six-week block will assist the learners to explore the concept and the different principles behind athletics and the assorted games and activities within the strand. Athletics will also provide the learners with a developed knowledge of the fundamental movement skills of running, jumping and throwing which will be channelled into other PE modules throughout the year.

Particular focus will be played upon the students learning the sport from many different viewpoints. Correct technique of sprinting and relay running, long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin will be thought throughout the six week block of athletics, with students experiencing performing the skills, coaching the skills etc.. In case of any additional adjustments will be required for skill developed earlier, recap of the tasks can be included in following weeks lessons. Learning aids such as visual and video learning wall (whenever possible) will be included in lessons. Skills will be thought in progressive manner, more basic and fundamental skills will be addressed first with more advanced tasks being added on later. By building on earlier skills and previous knowledge students are able to benefit more from learning process and progress further in their development (Naylor & Keogh, 1999, p.93). This concept is extremely important in all of the subjects, not just physical education. Student levels of ability will also be taken into the account and any adjustments required will be made, depending on situation.

The main assessment in this six week block of athletics will be visual observation carried out by the teacher to ensure the students participate and their ability to execute the fundamental skills. The teacher will give feedback to the students in a constructive manner. The teacher will also assess the students by asking them questions. Another form of assessment that will be undertaken is peer and self assessment. The students will be engaging in games that promote team work. Students will also be encouraged to self assess their own execution of skills and basics of the technique. This will encourage students to form a deeper more critical understanding of the skills, looking from coaching and athlete viewpoints.
