The leaves of the Hemp Dogbane contain toxins like Cymarin that are poisonous to animals in large quantities. Because of this and the bitter, sticky juice of the plant, most mammals avoid dogbane plants. However, the plant is a pollinator resource to many insects, and the leaves are food for the caterpillars of the hummingbird clearwing moth. It's soil is a stabilizer for the ecosystem because of the dogbane's root system, which prevents erosion.
