I found this week’s readings very interesting because it addressed an area of storytelling that is just as important, though slightly less fun, than the creative portion. But it crucial for students to understand why something like copyright matters in their work and in how they view the works of their peers. While reviewing the materials available on the Teaching Copyright website I came across the quote above. I think that it speaks to something very real about storytelling and language as a whole. It’s true that a story, like an idea, belongs only to the person who originates it so long as they keep it to themselves but as soon as they share that story it becomes available to a much larger public. In terms of copyright law, students might worry about what sharing might mean, whether that story still ‘belongs’ to them. Does sharing it make it less their own?
 
In a way, as the quote above references, sharing a story, like sharing an idea, intrinsically connects the originator to the thing being shared. It is referred to as theirs by the audience who receives it. Even without touching the topic of compensation, our students stories belong to them and teachers need to do everything in their power to inform students about things like copyright, and also educator ourselves on the matter so that we can advocate for them and have their ownership recognized by any and all interested parties. This becomes especially important when we’re considering digital platforms on which to share our students’ work which makes it available to a much larger audience than we might be able to control.
