RECORDS 1A & 1B. The Learner Diary - RAG Rating. This record was designed to encourage students to reflect on their own role in their learning. It is intended to help students assess how they have performed and found studying in the classroom with a view to making changes and improving their own learning experience. This is a self assessment record. Black & Wiliam (1998) state that assessment is most effective if 'learners are willing and able to self assess.' The students rate themselves as red, amber or green according to how they feel their own learning has progressed in class. This is a quick and effective tool to see how the students assess their own learning. It is easy to visually assess if someone is struggling and needs more support. The negative is that it relies on students being honest and not just rating themselves as 'green' because they feel that is what the teacher wants to see. I use this with my own Learner Diary - RAG Rating Progress Tracker record assessment form. If I noticed that a student has rated themselves 'red' for a couple of weeks, I can talk to them about it and find a new way forward with them. It works well as it helps to monitor progress of all students in a visual and easy to use way. However, it could be improved as currently students rate themselves as 'red' if they do not attend which is misleading at a glance as it could just look like they have found the work difficult. I would like to see another way used to signal absence as it is obvious if you do not attend you have missed work and I want to help those that feel they are struggling with their own efforts or the work in the classroom too.

Brown, Race & Smith (1996) suggest that learners need 'to be given feedback on their performance' and that it needs to be 'clearly explained'. The forms can be used for classwork and homework and have a very clear format that is both easy to use and write on and also to read. A real positive of these forms is that they have carbon copies so the teacher can have records for their file and the student can have a copy too without the need to spend time photocopying. I like using the records as they provide the opportunity to give the students positive feedback and there is also space to feedback areas to improve. The records are effective as they are not just providing students with a level. However, if you wish you can always include a mark relating to assessment objectives and a level as well as giving quality written feedback and ways to progress. The negative point about the forms is that the carbon copy can be messy and accidental marks seem to always appear. Furthermore, the students always seem to want a mark or a level despite you writing effective feedback.

This record was designed by the examination board for course providers to use a standard form to assess their student's speaking and listening skills. Ecclestone (2003) reports that assessment must have 'reliability, validity, consistency, authenticity, dependability and fairness.' The same form is used for every student. It is good that the form is only one page long so it is easy to access and share the criteria with the students. It is a simply grading system of pass, merit and distinction. The result is on the students GCSE English certificate. I like the fact that it is quick, easy to use and explain to students. I think it is a positive that students can visualize how to pass. I feel that a negative part of the form is that there is very little differentiating between the criteria for a pass and merit. I also feel that it should be a little bit more challenging to pass! I would like to improve the form by making more room to make notes. I always use a separate sheet to make notes on but think it would be more effective for the teacher to have a booklet that they open with the criteria on one page and the space to note everything on the adjacent with the added bonus that you can close the booklet to maintain confidentiality.

RECORDS 4A, 4B & 4C It is important to keep accurate records of how students have performed in their mock exams so that we can identify areas for improvement and work on these for the real exam. Tummons (2008) comments that 'records are useful and important to all tutors in helping plan, monitor and review learners' progress.' Record 4A is my own way of recording the student's marks for each question of the exam paper whilst I am marking. I like this record as I complete it as I go along and it makes it easy to see that if all the student's have scored low mark for question 3, I know I need to plan more work on language and structure. This method of assessment record keeping could be criticized by some for being old fashioned, paper based, time consuming and a duplicate of the computer based assessment record. Nevertheless, I still use my paper based assessment record as I can rely on it and it never freezes or crashes or is offline or unavailable when I need it. Record 4B works in support of 4A and provides more in depth feedback and action points for areas to work on for the real exam. It is effective and do not feel it needs improving as I use it in a one to one tutorial situation with students so everything is clear and agreed. Record 4C is Promonitor which is a great system for having all the students marks in one place as it can be accessed by all course teachers. It is also easy to see which student is on target as it is colour coded and any student 'in the red' needs an intervention. However, I am not a fan of this system as I find it time consuming to individually enter each mark for each question for each student as well as dates etc. It is technology that goes wrong and I have not been able to access it at a crucial moment.

Tummons (2008) argues that all tutors need to record and track the progress of individual learners.' Also given the time constraints of the course I teach on, the students sign a contract agreeing to complete three hours of out of class work a week. Homework records are designed to monitor this and track student progress. I have always used the college's plain assessment form for recording homework (see Record 4A). When I started a choose your own homework project I was given Record 5 which I started using. I have found the record quick and easy to use. I will continue to use it in future as I like the way it is set out as it makes it straightforward to view which student has completed work on a certain subject. This is significant because as a teacher you will be informed and aware of which student still needs to work on particular areas before an exam. The form is also adaptable to changing needs and assessment. I would improve the form by adding dates for the term which I will prepare in advance.
