2.) Secondly, I will divide the white board in half. One side will be titled, “Cyberbullying” while the other will be named, “Acceptable”. I will then grab my deck of index cards that will each contain a given scenario corresponding with the internet. The total number of index cards I will have will be the same as the number of students on my class roster. I will then read aloud the scenarios one by one. I will follow up by picking on each student from top to bottom on my roster (so that each gets a chance). I then want that child to come grab the index card that will have tape on the back, and place it on the side of the white board they think that scenario fits best under. 

Examples: 

One cyberbullying scenario would be, “Sally comes home from school and opens up her laptop to do some homework. She gets distracted and notices that she has a few new emails. Within one of the emails, she gets called ugly and stupid. Sally closes the laptop, runs to her room and spends the night upset and crying.”

One acceptable scenario would be, “John logged on to instagram and saw that he had some new comments on his recently posted photo. People commented that they loved his photo and that he looked handsome. This made John happy and proud.” 

3.) After each child comes up and places their index cards under one of the categories, I will go through them, read them each aloud again, one by one to the class, and have a discussion as to why that index card is in the right category or why it should be in the other one. 

4.) I will close this activity, by asking my students again, what cyberbullying is. I will ask why it is bad and wrong for this act to happen. I will then open it up for questions and answer any that they may ask. 

￮ sending out mean emails, texts, or DMs

￮ spreading rumors or gossip about someone 

￮ sharing embarrassing photos of someone without their consent 

￮ creating fake social media accounts in order to pretend you are someone else 

Prior to conducting my research on netiquette, I came to understand that there is much more to it than most people know. For instance, I never knew that when someone writes in all capital letters when they send a text message or email, that they are angry or shouting at you. I mean, I guess I knew it was more exaggerated but, I never knew that it was considered ‘bad netiquette’ or ‘rude’. I did not think that messages like that would receive their own category or profile. Another thing that I really did not think of prior to this assignment's research, was that not all people know the rules of the internet. Like there are families out there that don't care what their kids do on social media or have any involvement, especially if they're younger. And to add on to this, these children might not know how to properly use grammar and punctuation which is another example of bad netiquette. I guess I just never realized that there are children out there that are in a fend for themselves situation, where they don't learn right from wrong. 

Overall, my research has strengthened my value of education as a whole. I am blessed and lucky to have had teachers and family members that taught me about the internet Do’s and Don’ts. If I did not have these resources, I wouldn't be where I am today. Feeding off of this, I also realize how important the role of an educator is with their students. We have the control in our classrooms and we should use it to the best of our ability. Sharing our knowledge of the internet safety and manners with our kids is the best thing we can do. It also strengthened my power of knowing to correct and step into a situation when it is going bad. If I see someone acting off, I need to put an end to it before it escalates. The same rules that apply online also apply in real life. And vice versa.
